Now, this is perhaps not quite the right community for this bit of meta, since it doesn't actually have anything to do with Doctor/Master as a pairing - but we do all love the Master, right? And we're good at discussing things.

If you look at the Master's history throughout Who, wow, does that guy go through a lot of transformations. And I don't mean the "usual", regeneration kind. Crispy!Master, possessing a Traken body, shrinking, turning into a cheetah and then an ectoplasmic green snake, dying, ressurrecting, turning human, turning Time Lord again, dying again and let's not forget Shalka!Master's life as a domestic android. Aside from being evil and stalking the Doctor, this is his most consistent theme. Somehow, this gave me the crazy idea that you could actually have a

Posthumanist Reading of the Master

In the beginning [War Chief or Delgado!Master], the Master is a very traditional villain. Evenly matched with the hero, what distinguishes him are his morals, or lack thereof. But as the show progresses, he begins to straddle the line between "villain" and "monster", "human" (if we accept Time Lords as stand-ins for humans) and "post-human".

Discussion Questions:

The Rules: Be freely off topic and respond to any you feel like! Or none! Or just write comment crack/porn, since I had a lot of fun reading that last time and maybe you did too?

Think these questions are lame? I'm running out and we never talk about the actual questions anyway. Feel free to offer up some of your own in the comments and I'll edit the posts accordingly.

1) What are the Master and the Doctor's parents/families like (as kids, not their later possible shack-ups or breeding efforts)? Do you buy half-human, or looming? Houses or more nuclear-ish families or extended family structures? Siblings?

2) We've seen that the Master's Keller-Machine fear is the Doctor laughing at him/entirely dismissing him. What's his Silent Hill?* What's the Doctor's?

*For those who haven't played the game series or seen it played, the other worlds in Silent Hill serve as externalizations of characters' psychic trauma. They are hellish entrapments in which the protagonists' worst nightmares and latent terrors are unleashed in the form of environments and creatures derived from the persons' guilt/complexes/neuroses/obsessions, whether or not the subject is consciously aware of these issues.

I was way stymied, so  [personal profile] gritsinmisery was kind enough to give me this one:

3) If the Doctor and the Master had been good little Time Lords instead of running off to play in the Universe, what "jobs" would they have taken / career paths would they have followed? We all know the Rani is a biochemist... Let's face it, I don't think 'hypnotist' would have taken the Master very far on Gallifrey...*

*the mod would like to add that the concept of the Master as a stage performer hypnotist a la Vegas dinner show, only on Gallifery, is really funny to her.
