Recs

Today I'm going to rec two fics, a story and its remix. Quite often remixes can be read independently of their originals. In fact, I read this remix first, and thought I understood it (after reading it a second time, and wrapping my mind around its twisty-ness) but then I read the original, and, oh. I reccommend reading the the remix first so you can enjoy a good D/M fic before getting to the twist.

Title: You Will Be Me (The When I'm Gone Ontological Tautology Remaster)
Pairing: Theta/Koschei, Three/Delgado!Master, Shalka, Six/Ainley!Master, Seven/Ainley!Master
Length:2367 words
Warnings: this will break your brain
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): Nope (that's actually the author's name)
Why this must be read: Because it supplies us with two missing scenes I've been craving for a long time: one right after "The Daemons" and the other right before the TVM with Seven and Ainley!Master on Skaro. Because it's a cool remix (especially once you get to the bonus feature extended endings) that manages to add YET ANOTHER TWIST to a story that you didn't think could be twistier (this, my friends, is the fanfic of Seven's dreams). Because you can read it three times in a row and each time discover something new. Because the Master cryptically quotes the Beatles and Zagreus and the Doctor himself at the Doctor, and they play chess in a way that's not already clichéd, and generally are friends far more than enemies.

The Doctor exchanges a Pawn for an Emperor. The Master exchanges an Emperor for a Pawn.

"I believe that's stalemate," the Master says. He smiles. There is a pen in his hand, and he scribes an eight-word sentence on the back of Romana's letter in quick, neat copper-plate before folding it over. "Excuse me," he says, and stands. "I have an extermination to attend."

And now the original:

Title: All You Doctors
Characters: Seven, Ace
Length:
Warnings: this will break your brain even more
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] biichan
Why this must be read:
You can tell some really complicated stories about time travel. And then you can tell stories like this one. The chicken and the egg? Have nothing on this. If you love Seven, or paradoxes, or crazy thought experiments, you will love this.

"There's something I don't understand, though," Ace said. "If he gave me the jacket—if I gave that jacket to myself—if I'm always giving it to myself to give to myself later on—if ultimately it comes from nowhere, if it never existed outside my possession, how can it even exist at all?"

"The word you're looking for," I said, "is 'ontological paradox' and about the only thing you can do is to try to close them."

Ace gave me a thoughtful look. "You speak from experience, don't you?"
