Hello, all! I'm the first reccer in the system that's just been implemented here, and this is my first rec. It's a story that absolutely deserves pride of place.
Pairing: Doctor/Master (Ten/Simm!Master in the story, but with various other versions of the pairing implied)
Length: 3147 words
Warnings: Canonical character death
Author on LJ:
shinodabearAuthor website: None that I could find.
Why this must be read: It's probably the best post-"Last of the Time Lords" story I've seen. Naturally, this means it can be an intensely painful read as it takes us into the depths of the Doctor's grief. But the Doctor's sharply-drawn misery is counterbalanced by the beauty of the prose. Shinodabear takes inspiration from T. S. Eliot's poem "The Waste Land," borrowing its fragmentation (and some of its images) to create a powerful portrait of a devastated Doctor in a devastated universe. The story also does something crucial and extremely difficult--it captures the strength of the Doctor/Master bond without sentimentalizing the Master or prettying up the painful history between them. This is a must-read.
