Back to the text this week for today's DISCUSSION QUESTION CHALLENGE THING:

What was the Master's worst ever plan and why? Discuss.

You can use whatever category of worst you like.

And you can of course regale us with stories of bad plans that were never shown on the TV, heard on audio, read in books, etc (i.e. you can make something up if you like, or you can just say 'that one with the concords, because-'/similar).

OK - slight tweak to the usual discussion question format.

What Doctor Who "canon" have you not read/seen/heard yet that you would like to?

Doesn't have to be Master-related, though it can be. My idea being that you say a thing like 'Castrovalva' or 'the Jo Grant era' or 'I have never seen Glitz' or 'I would like to read the NAs' or 'I would like to listen to this Gallifrey everyone keeps going on about' and then other people in the comments tell you how awesome those things are and hopefully encourage more watching of Glitz-stories/whatever.

No shaming people who have never seen 'The Sensorites' (I haven't) - just enthusiasm.

Let's see how it works out.

Good discussing, guys! Here's another question to contemplate:

'Shada' was originally a Four story, and later re-cast as an Eight story. How would a similar change (either of which Doctor was in the story or which Master or both) affect a Doctor/Master story of your choice?

I even have an example fic from the anon meme: Prey of the Cheetahs (which is Seven story 'Survival' as a Three story).

Well, I thought last week's discussion thingy went very well - it even produced some spiffy art of Three as a vampire (inspired by 'The House That Dripped Blood', I think). So, hurrah for everyone! Please come again all.

Today's prompt/discussion question is:

What notable historical events should be a Doctor/Master story?

If you saw this post a few moments ago, it was a different question. That one will be back later.

You may have noticed my weekly Monday posts have been absent for a while. You may not have noticed. But anyway, they have. The drabble/sketch challenge has had a good innings, but it's just not working well enough any more. So, [livejournal.com profile] x_los and I have decided to overhaul it and turn it into the 'discussion/drabble/sketch challenge'.

Basically the way this works is that we will pose a question that you can a) discuss the answer to and/or b) create some fannish thing (such as fic or art) in response to. It should theoretically still be weekly.

This week's prompt/question is:

'Sharktopus' reads like a Master episode of 'Doctor Who' that the Doctor just didn't bother to show up for. What other programmes/films/etc starring actors who have played the Doctor or the Master do you wish had been a 'Doctor Who' episode? Discuss

We particularly welcome more obscure choices :D

The Doctor Who Meta Community is a weekly discussion comm that sponsors topics relating to both Nu Who and Classic Who. Every Monday is a new topic relating to Nu Who, and every Wednesday is a new topic relating to Classic Who.

This week, we discuss the Master's "redemption" in the final moments of The End of Time, and what it may mean about his relationship with the Doctor. Feel free to come share your thoughts! =)

First post here, hope it's not a complete failure.

Been reading the novel version of Scream of the Shalka, and ended up quoting and commenting bits of it on my journal, most of them regarding Shalka!Nine and his relationship to the robot/android Master. Realized after I made it that it might be relevant to the interests of this community, especially as I'd love to discuss them, and am not sure how many people in my flist are familiar with Shalka!verse/Doctor Who.
I don't feel it's really deep enough commentary to deserve the title of meta but possibly that distinction is needed? Also, is it ok to link to my journal? If not (but this is otherwise ok), I can move it over here. :')

TODAY, at 9 pm GMT/UTC (approximately 3 hours from now), I'll be watching "Curse of the Fatal Death" with whoever wishes to join me!  :-)

We'll be using this link to watch it from.  Follow the instructions as listed here to get to the chat room!  If you have any trouble with anything, I'll be checking this post and in the chat room about an hour beforehand to help as best as I can.

Don't know what your corresponding time zone time is?  Check out this other link.

And for those of you who can't make it/aren't really of the watchalong persuasion but want to be a part of the funtimes, there's an assorted bevy of things you can do to join in!  By replying to this post, you can:
  • Comment about CotFD!
  • Share your love and favorite moments!
  • Make comment fic about CotFD (because we need more)!
  • Make arts about CotFD (because we need more)!
  • Make interpretative dance videos about CotFD!
  • Ponder the existence of life
  • Spam us mercilessly*
*provided that said spam is actually relevant to the topic at hand.  For instance, spamming us with "Dalek bump enhancement technology"** would be perfectly suitable.  Spamming us with "Free college degrees at Hickville, USA" probably is not.

**You get bonus points if you actually do this.

I just finished watching "The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe." I loved it! It's one of those episodes, where I think, if the Master sat down and watched it, as we do, he would spend the entire time rolling around laughing at the Doctor and completely missing the point...or just not caring either way! :D So, let's have a contest/discussion. Vote for whichever episode from Classic or New Who you think would make the Master laugh the hardest at his best enemy!

Hello, comm! I hate to be a bother (oh, who am I kidding? I love being a bother), but I have a bit of a question.

Now, normally I'd just prompt this on the anon meme and be done with it, but I refuse to believe that this has somehow never been done before: but are there any pirate-themed D/M fanfictions hiding out there that you could direct me to/supply me with?

I was just going to ask this on [livejournal.com profile] dwcanon_fodder (one of my favourite things about our fandom) but then I became so curious about people's opinions that I decided to ask here, too.

Do Time Lords have money?

The Gallifrey audios make it clear that Time Lords have economic relationships with off-worlders and at the very least, the Gallifreyan government owns foreign currency - Braxiatel embezzles it for his Collection, and they try to sell things to offworlders to solve their economic crisis. The Doctor seems to have very little respect for property in general (see how he uses ATMs in New Who). On the other hand, he (and the Master even more so) likes status symbols in some of his regenerations.

But do Time Lords use money ON Gallifrey? Do they earn wages and buy stuff? If they don't have money, how might their system work (given that they definitely have social classes and more and less desirable jobs)? And in your personal canon, do you think that the Doctor's family was richer or poorer than the Master's?

Speculate away!

I will do a round-up of the work before the next watch-along. Last week's is temporarily delayed so it can go with any other work produced for The Daleks this week. <3

NOTES:

* FIND/PREP IT NOW IF YOU NEED TO DO SO. Still plenty of time!
* Our food theme is nightcaps (not the bobble-topped 19th c. kind, /though that would be funny/, and as such I cannot really discourage it). Most impressive, creative, or apropos choices get mad kudos. Post pics or tell us about it!
* The drinking game will be formulated below. I will start the thread, people can contribute now or as we watch, and then I'll make a wrap-up comment with all the rules.
* PLEASE POST REVIEWS HERE, OR LINK TO THEM! Funny, insightful, whatever, we want it.
* Discuss!

The Doctor defeats the Empress of the Rachnoss and meets Donna. Towards the end of the episode the Empress is killed by military on the direct order to fire from Saxon. Is it a well known fact that it is the first mention of the Master in the new Doctor series? Or just wild speculation that this Saxon person is indeed our beloved Master?

The Hobbit movie has been sick. The Hobbit movie needs healing. The Hobbit movie needs medicine.  In fact I'd go so far as to say that, what The Hobbit movie really needs, right now, is a Doctor.

So, for those of you who hadn't heard, Sylvester McCoy is going to be playing Radagast The Brown in the new movie version of The Hobbit. There's a lovely little interview with him that you can find over here, but there's obviously so much more to him playing the role than just that.  This is the Doctor we're talking about after all.  So, without further ado, I present to you The Hobbit Conspiracies.
Fair warning, it's very silly. )

Everyone and their dog has been doing the Five Things About a Character response posts. It might be interesting/provoke good conversations/make a good resource for fanwork producers or people looking for a new era to enjoy if we shared them in a convenient central location, and give us a chance to read the thoughts of a wider circle than just our besties. If you've done them already, please feel free to cut and paste your answers. If you've written some, you could always collect a full set. If you've not written any, this is your opportunity!

The meme is essentially:

"Pick a character and I will give and explain the top five ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them. Any and all characters welcome. (Even ones I haven't written but might know about...)"

I see no reason why this must just be for characters you have written/intend to write. If you have any meta to give, writer or no, or want to talk about Five Things You Keep In Mind When Drawing, that's cool too.

Obviously this will work a bit differently, with threads/headers for every Doctor, every Master, and a general Other Characters header, because why not. Feel free to make other headers for characters NOT already included, but please don't just post anywhere for characters we already have, that's super messy and annoying.

Discussion and cross-commenting on each others' responses is totally encouraged! Not that I think it's terribly likely, as you're a good crowd, but wanky arguing is totally discouraged. Cross the line, get bah-leeted--y'all know what's appropriate and what isn't.

**EDIT** IT IS STILL COMPLETELY KOSHER TO REQUEST CHARACTERS OF PEOPLE PARTICIPATING! Just leave a comment on their own meme on their lj (which is really no business of ours, but, whatevs), or here, on a response they've posted!
