Guys, when you don't pay attention to the tags we're using and make up duplicate tags or frankly dumb stuff like 'who' and 'slash' (...we're a Doctor/Master slash community. We don't need tags for that. That is literally all the content.), I have to go back through and delete what you've done. It's annoying/time-consuming, and I sometimes can't be bothered to replace deleted junk tags with the proper tags. Thus no one can find your content properly. Do yourself a favor and tag sensibly.

If you haven't already, please check out the Masterlist of Fanwork Masterlists (META!!) and add your own. There's more than likely some cool stuff you've never seen on some of these, and for reasons discussed in that post, making a Master List is well awesome. Also there is a new little link to the post in our 'Links' section (upper left of the layout, under the header and the little 'profile' Best Enemies icon), that you may always readily find this repository of good stuffs.
[identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
* Earlier this year someone made the comment somewhere or other that the diasporic nature of fandom and posting means snippets of our work are everywhere, and can be difficult for readers to find. She suggested that we sort of owed it to ourselves and readers to collect all that together. Archiving doesn't float my personal boat, because I like things being tied to the communities and pages that occasioned their creation and the community-building functions of livejournal, et al., and because sometimes the aesthetics or the set-ups of particular archives don't do it for me, in terms of usability. Nevertheless I recognize that archiving is great at preserving and centrally storing work. It's a shame when work that isn't FRESH THIS VERY MINUTE!! gets buried and never read/commented on by people who might really enjoy it. With that in mind, I think it'd be great if people who had Master Lists of their fanwork could comment below with links to those lists, and if people who don't currently have them could think about knocking them up! Also why not update your Master List to make it more inclusive? I thought mine was basically fine, until I was sitting here tonight wincing as I had to add fic from August 2009... yeah...

IT'S NOT PIMPING YOURSELVES, GUYS, IT'S FUCKING ***RESPONSIBILITY!!*** (OH YEAH)

IF YOU ARE POSTING A MASTER LIST, PLEASE PUT 'MASTER LIST' AS YOUR SUBJECT LINE. WE MAY COMPILE THEM IN AN INDEX IN THIS POST AT THE END!

* In this vein, I'm also investigating a linking system like [livejournal.com profile] norsekink's Delicious set up. This would allow us to have a central archiving system with tags that make sense for our needs (in a way Teaspoon's sorting system sometimes doesn't, by its nature). It would also preserve the context of fics (and thus promote commenting/interaction via the lj format), not necessitate uploading, and allow for both some centralized stat gathering (what's more popular, and to what extent?) and the provision of additional information about a fic you might be interested in (see the [livejournal.com profile] norsekink delicious's non-pairing tags). I don't think it'd annoy people because it wouldn't be hosting without express permission, it'd just be linking to something they put up on their own terms (but linking in an organized fashion)? I'd like to use it for the kink meme and for D/M fic generally. The issues I see are:

a) Delicious has recently had a big old falderal about the '/', and I'm not sure where they are with that (these tags seem fine?),
b) the sweeping changes the company pushed through overnight on tagging indicate they're less fandom-savy/friendly than lj (grim indeed), and thus that they might do something similar again and render a lot of work useless,
c) it would be just that--a lot of work, and I might have to call upon others, a la the Tagging Brigade initiative, to help me out.

Do people who know more about Delicious have any thoughts?

* Lastly, I thought it might be fun to combine the posting of your Master Lists with a bit of a meme, if you are so inclined. Answer as many of the below as tickle your fancy:

What did you write that you would never have predicted?
What’s your favorite story? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
Story most under appreciated by the universe?
Story that could have been better?
Sexiest story?
Most fun story?
Story with single sweetest moment?
The story that made you cry?
Hardest story to write?
Easiest story to write?
Most overdue story?
Did you take any writing risks? What did you learn from them?
Do you have any fanfic goals?

There's an option to sign as non-UK citizens/residents, and so I'd recommend ticking that box and signing wherever you're from, because ACTA is so pan-national, and it's the number of signatures/awareness generated that counts at the moment.

(Taken most recently from [livejournal.com profile] amber1960, slightly adapted.)

If you're from the UK and you believe in freedom of speech and an uncensored interenet, you really need to sign this petition. There are others floating about, but that particular one is the best way to ensure that your voice gets heard. It's hosted on the directgov website and addresses parliament directly. If it gets more than 100,000 signatures, it becomes eligible for discussion in the House of Commons.

Everyone's been getting so worked up over SOPA -- and rightly so -- that ACTA seems to have slipped under the radar. This is hugely problematic, because ACTA is a similar bill, but it has the potential to be far more damaging than SOPA ever could be.

Some people seem to have this misconception that ACTA is the 'European SOPA', but that simply isn't true. It's a global treaty, and it's already been signed by eight countries, including the US, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore. Europe votes on Thursday. If they vote 'no', the bill will have to be taken back to the drawing board and reformulated, which should buy us some time at the very least.

If you think this doesn't affect you, you're wrong. If ACTA passes, it could well signal the end of the internet as we know it, and that isn't an exaggeration. It's not just about watching movies and television online. If ACTA passes, sites like YouTube, Livejournal, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and even Google and Wikipedia could become impossible to maintain. ACTA would allow ISPs to monitor your net activity and cut off internet access for your entire household if one person is suspected of breaching copyright. Think Big Brother is Watching. I don't think I need to emphasise just how damaging it can be to be without internet access in this day and age, when we rely so heavily on technology.

It's not only bloggers and fandom that would be affected, either. Small businesses, independent film-makers and unsigned musicians who have previously found their niche online would also suffer hugely, and would be at risk of being bullied into submission by Hollywood and multinational corporations under accusations of copyright infringement. All those artists who found fame by uploading covers of songs to YouTube would never have had the opportunity to do so under ACTA, as those cover versions would be prohibited.

I know the internet has its problems, but to my mind it's the single greatest invention to come out of modern times, and it would be an absolute travesty if we were to lose that now. From a personal point of view, I can't even put into words how important this is to me. I've met some of my closest friends through the internet and online fandom, people whom I would likely never have met without it, and it's given me this amazing social support system. I don't want that to end here, and I want to preserve it for future generations so that they can have the same experience and opportunities I've been given through my online interactions.

I know that opinions on the seriousness of copyright infringement and online piracy vary wildly, but that isn't really the point. Internet giants such as Google are opposed to this bill, and it's pretty safe to say that they're not in favour of copyright infringment, as anyone who's ever had a fanvid taken down from YouTube will be painfully aware. Whatever your stance on copyright, this isn't the way to go about dealing with it. This is dangerous legislation that impeaches on some of our most basic human rights, such as the right to privacy and freedom of speech.

So if you're from the UK, please, please sign the petition. If you hail from elsewhere in the world, there may well be similar movements in your own country, but I think the most effective thing anybody can do right now is to keep talking about this. Talk about it on Livejournal, on Twitter, on Tumblr, on Facebook, and anywhere else you can think of. Make sure this issue is never far from people's minds. The internet is an amazingly powerful tool: let's utilise it while we still have the chance.

Please repost and spread the word :)

SAY NO TO ACTA!

Please consider reposting this, especially if you have a large proportion of UK flisties. And please consider spreading the word via other platforms: Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, your own personal network.

There's been a lot of worry that LJ changing its comment formatting will affect our ability to post 'subjects' with comments in anon memes. If this becomes an issue for new comments within the next few days, or strips existing comments of their data, let me/the mod team know, and we'll look into 'opting into' comment subjects, changing the journal format if necessary, and redesigning a layout to match. It should be possible, if a bit of work, but may not even be necessary.

Thanks!

Two poems and two drabbles are all very well, but I'm extending this challenge to end Sunday night, BST, because I have not yet had any costume porn or hilarious art out of you. I EXPECT BETTER, FRANKLY. WHERE IS THREE'S CANON PROPENSITY TO DRESS IN DRAG BEING HILARIOUSLY EXPLOITED TO PUT HIM IN A MARIE ANTOINETTE COSTUME BECAUSE HE HAS THE HAIR FOR IT? SHAME. SHAAAAAME.

Hey all,

Due to low turn-outs, we're going to rest the official Watchalongs for a while and refocus our comm's attention on a series of fic and art challenges. The first of these should be up tomorrow, ooooh. You can still use the chat rooms, and/or post on b_e to propose Watchalongs in an individual capacity* and alert anyone interested in joining you. You can, of course, also propose any Watchalong or chat related suggestions to the mod team at [livejournal.com profile] b_emods, i.e. 'Hey, let's all do THIS at THIS TIME,' etc.

Thanks, and we'll have Challenge Info out to you soon!

* Of Who or anything decently related, and I play loose with my definition of 'decently related'. Forgiveness is easier than permission. Just use your discretion, post what you like, and I'll talk to you if it's not kosher.

We'd been thinking about it for a while, I promise, but [livejournal.com profile] ontd_who is currently running a friending meme (v cool com, check it out), which reminded me to do it today, rather than never.

What's a friending meme? you may ask. And why do we want one? (Unless you know about this already, in which case skip to the end).

Well, [livejournal.com profile] best_enemies, a friending meme is basically a questionnaire you fill out about yourself, then people comment and say they want to be your friend, and you comment on other people/the same people's questionnaires and tell them you want to friend them. It's kind of like saying 'I want to meet cool new people', which is good for the socially awkward among us, who like cool people. In this case it's also much like ye old introduction post, except we do it all at once, and the aim of the game is to comment and mix and socialise in a non threatening way.

So without further ado, I present:

THE FIRST BEST_ENEMIES FRIENDING MEME!

Of late I've received two very interesting Challenge ideas from comm members, and so I thought I'd open up a broader discussion. Anyone have anything they'd like to see/do as a Challenge? Things other comms are doing that you liked, fresh meat, a thing we've already done that you'd like to see again? Do not be shy! The worst you can do is suggest the Crispy!Master-Covered-in-Puddingathon, and even then I'll just pass over it in polite, respectful silence.
[identity profile] x-los.livejournal.com
Hot damn guys, I have just spent an hour deleting repetitive tags and/or tags that do not cohere with our system. You can make new tags all you like, but before you embark on that great adventure, please take a glance at:

1) the existing tags, and
2) our Tagging Guide

and make sure what you're doing is necessary, doesn't already exist, and, if it's say, a pairing, is set up like the other pairings. Also wash behind your ears.

--Your Mom

As a side-note, I will personally shank the next person to re-create the tags 'doctor/master' and 'slash'. It's a Doctor/Master com. EVERYTHING IS DOCTOR/MASTER. And unless you've genderswapped one of them, it's INHERENTLY slash (and one could make an argument in many cases that seemingly heterosexual encounters between them under such conditions would still come under the rubric of the 'queer'). Basically I am so tired of deleting these two absolutely silly tags I could slay bunnies.

Do you want to be responsible for its death?
[identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
* The end of the Marco... (I am waiting for you to finish, guys) watchalong will be TONIGHT at 8PM BST, as decided by le Poll-o . BE THERE OR NEVER SEE ONE SAVE HIS OWN ASS BY WHINGING ABOUT GOUT!! (I hear it is quite a sight to see.)

* SIXABRATION!!!! Get so excited.

* Recently we've had some kinda dubious anon meme posts. The prompts in question are fine; some prompts are responses to others, and you're allowed to have opinions. But exercise best judgement/play well with others. Don't diss other people's prompts when you make yours. You may be anon, but this ain't who_anon. Not everything's gonna be your cuppa. It would be nice if we could avoid  'your choices are invalid, this character is this way' in the future.

BUT: prompts are good things to get, and thanks for all the prompts and all the responses recently. Some of them are not my cuppa, but that is cool--there are enough cuppas to go around, and I have come to terms with Cumberbatch!Master and will no longer make sulky anon meme posts about the meme (METAMEME!!). #campaignpromise #leadingbyexample #beinglessofatool

Well hi!
In the interest of keeping some art challenges going alongside all the ripper fic prompts and challenges that get posted here, lo, I have become art mod.
Basically nothing changes, except there should be a few more art recs up, and every now and again you should see some prompts asking nicely for you to draw something along a theme rather than write something along a theme. (Like the Calendar Project from a while back, essentially things like that, and in fact I'll be doing my level best to wrap that all up at some point.)
Also, if people have ideas for such a challenge - or a image they really want to see people have a try at - I'd love to hear it, so message me.

Cheers m'dears.

It's the end of November, so

1. Please post your Big Bang art here on b_e, unless you've already pm'd me and let me know you'll be a little late, or
2. Please PM me to let me know you'll be a little late and tell me when you expect to have it in.

In a few days, I'll pm tardy artists, and then start calling on pinch hitters.
[identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
With about a week left until the end of the Big Bang Art Period, now is the time to:

* get busy if you haven't,
* POST NOW if you have, and
* generally let me know via PM if something is up and you won't be able to make it in with your art piece(s) for any reason.

If you're trying for a late submission, please also get posting. Parts will do, the whole is not necessary--as long as you tell me it'll be about Big Bang length by the month's end, I'll take your word for it. This way I can get some idea of how much fan-art I'm trying to get a hold of.
[identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
B_E doesn't necessarily police things like Standardizing Fanfic Headers because we're not that sort of com, but here are some helpful things to think about when posting fic here:

1. A standard header goes something like:

Title: My Tragical Story (<--possibly link to fic here)
Author: x_los
Pairing: Three/Cheetah!Master, Jo, Brax (This is the standard, most universal, and easiest to understand way of telling people the pairing and other characters in your story. You could make a case for your brave new style, or campaign against the admittedly problematic semantic conflation of Masters with their Actors, which doesn't happen with the Doctor and Romana numbers, but if you want boilerplate, at the moment, this is it.)
Rating: NC-17 (You can use whatever rating system you prefer, but G to NC-17 is, again, standard, most universal, and easiest to understand.)
Word Count: 200,653 (optional)
Summary: The Doctor sleeps with Cheetah!Master, and Brax pops in with a bowler hat to laugh at him some more. Meanwhile, Jo eats a delicious trifle.
Warnings/Spoilers: (a matter of personal discretion)
A/N: (optional--if what you're posting isn't in a standard format or is mixed media, perhaps consider a note)

"Oh god, this trifle is more appealing to me even than Welshmen!" (<--possibly link to fic here)

Something like the above format will make it easy for who_daily to pick up your fic, and may make the fic more appealing to readers.

2. THINK HARD ABOUT PEOPLE'S FLISTS

Long ago, I tried to post like ten kink meme responses in a big DIGEST with tons of extra lines between things making the post far longer than it needed to be. It was unsightly, a burden on others' flists, and the sort of thing one does when one has not really thought about how people use lj.

In general: space economy is important.

3. Graphics:

Graphics can give a post visual interest, but they can also be over-used and visually irritating.

The *only* firm rule is that NOTHING visual above a cut can be non-worksafe. The eye is drawn to pictures in a way it isn't to standard text. Please think, 'Could having this site up, with my post on it, get delgados_gurl97 fired from TasteeBurger Corp for looking at it on her coffee break if her boss walks by?' WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF DELGADOS_GURL97?!

As far as graphics-on-fic: irritating or pleasant, it's a matter of personal taste again. Just think about others flists, and it's probably going to be cool.

4. Tags

We have an open tagging system, meaning you can create your own tags! BUT with great tagging power comes great responsibility! Please take a glance at the tags we have before creating your own? It saves the tag mods a lot of eye-rolling over the eighteenth attempt to make a 'doctor/master' tag. Guys, it's a doctor/master com. Chances are, /we know/.

These are ONLY GUIDELINES: we're not going to ban you for your uncut luxuriant depictions of the Master pelting a naked Doctor with soft fruit. We'll talk to you about the magic of lj cuts, but it's no big. You know, just--be excellent to each other.
[identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
In case you missed it over the weekend, we need RP mods! More info here: http://community.livejournal.com/best_enemies/419012.html .

I've had some PMs and emails, but could stand to consider a few more! I'll give it another 24 hours before I get back to everyone. In that time period, please consider asking me for more info or dropping me an 'I'm interested,' as per the post.
[identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
Our current role play mod and developer had to step down due to some personal commitments.

I am now looking for a /group/ of people to share the burdens and awesomenesses of modding the RP. While its quiet now, there are a LOT of interested people, both currently playing and hovering around, and some exciting possibilities. Check out the lj development com via our userinfo, and follow the links over to dreamwidth, where the RP is hosted, if you're curious and have yet to take a look at what's up.

COMMITMENTPHOBIA:

* You do NOT have to commit your life to this, or have all the experience ever in and of yourself--that's the point of having a team of mods. Share the looooooad, as Samwise would say in a time-warping voiceover.
* You do not need to be free JUST THIS SECOND--we know it's NaNo/Diwali/coming up on Thanksgiving and Christmas/almost exams--this is a long-term thing, so if you want to mod and feel you can, when the shit's calmed down a bit, apply, please!

AND YOU:

* You do not have to like, club together and come forward--anyone interested should just PM me individually, and I'll fit together a mod-team.
* You don't have to currently be a b_e mod in any way, shape or form, or so steeped in Old Who it bleeds out your eyeballs. Newbies welcome! All we ask is a willingness to /get/ familiar with the necessary material, and we'll be more than willing to help you our there.
* You can be one of the players or not--either's fine.

EXPERIENCE HAS MADE ME RICH/AND NOW THEY'RE AFTER ME:

* You do not necessarily need experience running an RP OR RPing for years and years. I really want /some/ of the mods to have it, but if you have other strengths (good world builder/organizer/communicator/strong writer and developer, etc.), those are *highly* necessary elements of the team. Just tell me about them!
* If you have experience with RP, that is fantastic, and I'd love to hear about it!

SO:

Please PM me with a short note saying you're interested, and maybe a sentence or two on why you are, or what you've done before, or what you want to do with the game, or your questions on the topic. You know, not a super-formal application, just give me something more to work with than a bare name. My only absolute requirements are that you must be a good communicator and flexible enough to work with others (both players and fellow team members).

Here's something you didn't know you wanted: the official Best Enemies twitter feed has landed.

Some points:
  • It absolutely will not post f-locked entries.
  • It absolutely will not re-post your content, beyond the title of your post, and the first few characters of the post proper. It merely links back to the original LJ entry.
  • In fact, it is essentially an RSS feed (which anyone can set up for their own personal use on non-LJ sites) fed into Twitter.
  • It won't post your username (unless you use it in the first 140 odd characters).
  • It's no more searchable than the community, which also comes up on Google searches.
  • It updates every 30 minutes, which might be why entries haven't appeared if you're looking for them.
  • We don't know what happens if you post an LJ cut or picture in the first couple of characters yet, but I'll update when we do. HOWEVER, it is true that when you click on a link in Twitter, it'll take you to the post itself, rather than the community. This means if things have been cut as not safe for work you'll just be taken straight to them. There's a warning on the Twitter page, but remember: click with care.
  • I don't know who the person at BestEnemies is, but that's not us.
  • It's (loosely) moderated by me, so let me know if you have any issues with the working of it, or with the idea of it.
  • Please comment here if you're looking for technical explanations.

There have been so many big lj kerfuffles over the years--some justified, some histrionic, some histrionic ABOUT something justified, and endless variations thereof.

Actually I don't care THAT much about This Particular Outrage (tm). While silly little 'pingbacks' are still so buggy, it'll be dicey to post anything potentially-problematic in which we cite examples to the mod com so we can ask co-mods what they think we should do about it. But, for a com our size, we (comparatively) rarely have issues of that sort, so I'm not crying you a river? I understand why people do care, though, and I respect that. I am much more worried about other people, especially people in fandom, migrating to dreamwidth. Lj's been where I lived online for six years, and it's difficult to shake the belief that, like other nonsense, this too shall largely pass.

Kerfuffle # 678 has some people worried as to the future of b_e were something to happen to livejournal, or simply if there's a slow dribble of people from livejournal to dreamwidth, who close or stop using their livejournal accounts in this process.

You may have noticed there's no Dreamwidth!b_e. This question has actually come up a couple of times before. Dreamwidth doesn't allow community-importation at the moment due to copyright issues (i.e. a mod could agree to content-sharing, but not each and every poster). Ergo I could agree to transfer b_e, but they couldn't be sure that each and every poster agreed--which is interesting as they /will/ transfer comments on my livejournal sans consent. They also have a firm anti-mirroring stance--they'd prefer if, for the moment, people didn't replicate content on both journal platforms. And I'd prefer to respect them/not piss them off/not deal with a duplicate!com with comments and content that don't cross over, for twice the work (it would be, in many ways, managing two b_es, with messy and imperfect interaction).

As far as protecting b_e, we're looking into ways of storing the information for transfer in case dreamwidth changes their not-inflexible policy, or of otherwise replicating the whole com pretty much as it is. I already have the b_e name reserved. If people more techno-savvy than myself have ideas, I'd be grateful for them, but if all else fails, we'll store this info for the time being, replicate the set up (and hopefully the user-base), and re-open a much-the-same b_e over there, slowly and manually re-posting the old content by hand if we have to.

I'd like to underline, though, that these are back-up measures we're taking because I am cautious and want something more dependable than the wayback machine in case everything blows up in a nuclear war. But I don't believe it will. LJ is our home, and, for the moment, we're staying. Should something happen, there will be an official b_e on the other side.

As far as non-b_e D/M coms, on dreamwidth, lj, and the moon, it's splendid to have a diversity of them out there in the world! Each one can branch off and have its own atmosphere, do its own thing! Another com won't be b_e, but then, why should it be? They sure don't need my blessing, and will doubtless have their own quirks, specialization and flavor.

If you have other points to make, have some info on how to back up the data, or generally want to chat, let's do it.
