One more Wayback story, before I pass the recs torch on to
qaffian_luvr!
(In the meantime, I'm going to cheat, and mention that if you'd like some of my recs for newer stuff, I have an old post with 30 themed Doctor/Master recs + associated fanmix that I don't think I've linked here before:
Five Reasons Doctor/Master Is The Best Dr. Who Pairing.)
Title: Variations on a ThemeCharacters: Seven, Ace, Ainley!Master, OCs

Why this must be read: Okay, I am mainly linking to this because I want more stories about the Doctor and Ward, and that means more people would have to read this fic.
This is another one that could be a serial, right down to the bit toward the middle where you have no idea what's going on with the plot but keep on anyway : it's a gen story that pits Seven against a post-
Survival Master who is in rather bad shape, and a mysterious group of locals who insist on putting themselves in the middle of things. It's got Seven being Seven, an excellent Ace, Master!angst, an amazing plot that's all about temporal twistiness, OCs I'd love to see more of, and an unexpected bittersweet ending.
It's got a few minor proofreading issues, but considering it was originally posted in 1998 on alt.drwho.creative, I refuse to be as picky as usual.
Excerpt:"Probably not," he admitted, answering the man's challenge. "I meet so many, you know. Old friends, new friends..." he paused, his eyes, gray today Ace noted, boring into the stranger's soul, "...or enemies. One never knows."
The man met that intense stare and held his ground. A small, amused smile was forming at the corners of his lips. Ace was impressed. Not many could stand up to the Doctor when he switched to 'Intimidate' mode. She had seen creatures twice the man's size and armed to the teeth cower beneath that gaze.
Apparently, the Doctor didn't find what he was looking for. "Chances are we haven't met...yet."
The man blinked. "Excuse me?"
"But will. Time is like that."
"Is it? I wouldn't know."
