A/N: Rewatched Shakespeare in Love a few days ago, so that would account for this chapter. Also Dame Judi Dench? Rocks my Socks. To any famous physicist that's insulted during this fic, remember these aren't my views but those of two aliens who know more that you.
Summary: The cat gets a name! Shakespeare learns the hard way to watch where he puts his hands. Martha contemplates hiding under a desk.

Another rec, another angsty story. This fic wasn't originally included in my rec-list but after those last ten minutes of "The Water of Mars", I felt it deserved the honor.

Why this must be read: Because, especially after "The Waters of Mars", it gives a brilliant description of the Doctor. Because, despite all his do-good attitude and words of sympathy, the Doctor is really similar to the Master. He can be ruthless ( like he was against the Racnoss) and unforgiving ( the Family of Blood) and he can be delusional about being a god ("the laws of time will obey me").
Since the Master appeared, the Doctor has been the yin to the Master's yang and this story is all about this. It's about being on the path where every step takes you closer to the edge between evil and good, fighting a fight that is not worth it and, above all, it's about finding out the the safer place in the universe is in your greatest enemy's arms.

Excerpt: We walked back to the TARDIS, under the graveyard sky. He looked older than ever, and I felt tired. Time was growing short. And sooner or later, I would have to stop believing in the gulf between us, the imaginary void between good and evil. I was one neurosis away from being him, and he knew it. Always had.

I shut the door, and put my back to it. Watched him touch the controls of my ship, fingers light and gentle, a genuine smile on his face as we took off. I wondered how much more he would take from me without needing to ask, and I wondered, as the ship grew darker and he held out his hand, if he was only one kindness away from being me.
