Question - Master in the Time War

Currently, I'm writing a fic that focuses on the Doctor and the Master during the Time War. I'm having a reasonable time writing how this affects the Doctor - although I'd love to read other people's thoughts on that too. However, where I feel a bit thrown is with the Master. He does need to be affected, and we know from Sound of Drums that he was so scared he ran, but what was it that scared him? The Daleks? Considering what we know now could it have been the Time Lords themselves? What parts of the War might have a negative impact on him and which is he not bothered by that the Doctor would be? I'd love to see what people think - it would be incredibly helpful for my writing and I'm interested in what the different takes might be.

Another thought/question: what roles do you think they had in the Time War? How do you think it was fought? I have my own ideas on that, but again, I'd be really interested to see what other people think. For example, is it fought in space? On various planets? In the Vortex? Do one/both sides form alliances with others? What exactly is the Cruciform? How does placing the War in a Time Lock work? Does this suggest that other planets/races were not involved? This seems to contradict what we know from New Who e.g. the Nestene Consciousness made homeless, Gelth etc.
