My last rec! It took some hard thinking, but I finally decided on something longer, and here you have it!

Pairing: Ten/Simm!Master
Length: 40,243
Warnings: Violence, language, explicit sex, bdsm
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): www.whofic.com/viewuser.php or [livejournal.com profile] lamiel_writes
Why this must be read:

In a word? Because it's brilliant. But I suppose I need to say more than that. It uses the trope of the Master living with the Doctor on the TARDIS, following on from a slightly alternate LotTL ending. So far, not unusual. But ... there's an intensity, a complexity and realism, that is so often missed out in that type of fic. It's dark, and funny, and never easy; vicious and raw at times. The Master is not a nice man, and the drums are tearing him apart. The Doctor also shows that he isn't always a nice man either, and he's brought low by guilt and grief. We catch a glimpse of the Time Lord Victorious, dark and powerful, and it works. It isn't overdone, it isn't ridiculous. The characterisation is spot on, the narrative voice brilliant (it's written from the Master's POV, which isn't used as often as the Doctor, and it's even more wonderful for that). It is dark, it's made me cry, and it does include BDSM, something I'm not the hugest fan of. But it's well-written, true to them, and the reason for and execution of it make me feel that without that aspect it wouldn't be half the fic it is. This is long; it twists and turns, and there are times when you think there is no way it can ever end in anything but tragedy. It does not have a completely happy ending, it has a realistic one, and that's one of the most important things you can ask for. Truly, one of the best multi-chapter Ten/Simm!Master fics I've ever read.

Excerpt:

The fifth week, the Doctor began to look strained. He spent more time in the console room again, still not speaking to the Master, but not quite ignoring him either. In fact it was the opposite: the Doctor seemed unable to leave him alone. If the Master went anywhere for any length of time — the library, the kitchen or the console room — after awhile the Doctor would turn up there too. He did not speak to him. But he stayed close to him.

The sixth week, the Master’s headaches began in earnest. His whole body seemed to throb with the endless drumbeat, radiating from a point just behind his temples. Bile stung his throat. 47 days after the Doctor had stopped talking to him, he curled on his bed, his hands pressed against the sides of his head, and cried in an agony of frustration, pain and fury at the Doctor, at himself, and at the Time Lords who had died and left him alone with the sickening, never-ending, relentless drums.

Dear Mods:  If this is not allowed, please delete.

Over a year after I opened my Dreamwidth account and I was still waiting for a Doctor/Master-focused comm to join there.  I wait no more.  A new community is now there at <span  lj:user='doctor_and_master' style='white-space: nowrap;'><a href='http://doctor-and-master.dreamwidth.org/profile'><img src='http://s.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png' alt='[community profile] ' width='16' height='16' style='vertical-align: text-bottom; border: 0; padding-right: 1px;' /></a><a href='http://doctor-and-master.dreamwidth.org/'><b>doctor_and_master</b></a></span>.

It will never hold a candle to [livejournal.com profile] best_enemies , but it's another place to hang out when LJ goes wonky if you like.

Also, as I know sweet F-A about running a comm, I'd be happy for any help.

Editted:  Ack!  All right, my techno-fail is obvious.  The link didn't work, so I am letting you know that the Dreamwidth community is called Doctor and Master:  Ultimate Ambivalency and should be at www.doctor_and_master.dreamwidth.org.  (And, dammit, why doesn't the link thing here in LJ work for me right now?)
