More fic from the Anon Meme. I love the Anon Meme. I treasure the Anon Meme. Have you visited your Anon Meme today guys?

Title: Unknown.

Pairing: One/WarChief!Master

Length: Approx 2250

Summary: One and the Master talk about their granddaughter Susan.

Warnings: Non-con.

Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): Unknown.

Why this must be read: This is one of those fics that just makes me want to squee and flail and shove it into the hands of everyone within reach, regardless of fandom, shipping preferences, or whether I actually, you know, know them. I want to spend all day raving about how perfect phrases like 'wilds of space' are. It is just Good Fic. It's got absolutely spot-on characterisation of Susan, the War Chief and One, and yet makes the One/WC!Master pairing work, albeit in a totally sickening way. It's one of those fics that packs a world of detail and insight into every sentence so you're reeling from one to the next just holding on for the ride. It lets you mourn for their relationship and sympathise with their points of view whilst also understanding exactly why they're not together at this point. In particular it has two strengths that probably work so well because they support one another.

Firstly, it contextualises everything. It touches on the rift between Koschei and Theta, but doesn't simplify it to merely a personal falling out. Whatever caused it, it's firmly placed within the realms of societal expectations and protocol and what that means for both of them (also Bad Things. But it's the other stuff that really intrigues me.) Whilst still individuals, the implication is that they in no way sprang full-grown from the forehead of Rassilon, and that is awesome. That supports the other thing I adore about this fic, which is the particular characterisation of One. Our Fearless Leader is fond of pointing out that One is not the little boy Five reminisces wanted to drive train engines as a boy (actually touched on here). This fic shows how some of the changes that we've seen take place over the course of the Doctor's life might have occured, and while not trying to create some kind of overarching unifying theme a la the Drums, it reconciles some of the differences without trying to prevent One from being the fantastic, irascible old individiual he is onscreen. Also omg hypnotising as a socially accepted thing with legitimate applications I love it. And you will love it too.*

*This is not a contractually ratified promise. But it's still true.

Forty years ago today, the Master first showed up in Doctor Who. Not a character /called/ 'the Master', but about as Time Lord as a cheese wheel, stuck in the center of the Land of Fiction,* or a character who essentially performed the same plot functions as the Master but was not explicit named as such--none of that shit. The honest to god Master rolled up on January second in the form of Roger Delgado in 'Terror of the Autons' and proceeded to register dissatisfaction with Britain's standard of circus entertainments with a vengeance. We may never know (unless we get him drunk and ask (I do not even think you have to get him drunk, probably Looking Like Jo Grant and Being In Earshot will do it***)) what he came for (probably alimony, tbh), but bless him if he hasn't squirmed his weaselly way into our hearts and minds. The last with the help of highly illegal psychic-control aids, bless.

To celebrate his entry into (paltry human) middle age, have a PARTY POST! ALL THIS WEEK, please post sketches, gifs, drabbles, thoughts, discussiony-bits, etc. Range wide and free, anything goes, but if you want prompted in your fanwork creations, have some--

Midlife Crisis Prompts:

* desire to achieve a feeling of youthfulness
* abuse of alcohol
* acquisition of unusual or expensive items such as motorbikes, boats, clothing, sports cars, jewelry, gadgets, tattoos, piercings, etc.
* paying special attention to physical appearance such as covering baldness, wearing "younger" designer clothes etc.
* entering relationships with younger people/affairs/'Seven Year Itch'
* work or career (or lack thereof)
* spousal relationships (or lack thereof)
* maturation of children (or lack of children)
* physical changes associated with aging

NEXT FRIDAY NIGHT we're having a Thraco-style food-inclusive watchalong. Details forthcoming!

* Not to be confused with a very... vexing dream Two had soon after about the Master of the Land of Friction.**
** Two probably says 'oh my' during sex. Man I hope so. That's too good not to be true.
*** Probably at this point even silly Colonel Trenchard has heard *all about* the Master's 'difficult wife'.****
**** Bonus points for fic in which Trenchard alludes to the Troubles that poor beleaguered man has gone through to Three, and Three is Not Amused that, due to period conventions, he's sacrificed his masculinity in the telling. Also the fact that there was a telling to begin with.
