Why this must be read:

The drabble response challenge on b_e is something I both curse and adore. Actually, I generally only curse it when it gets over 5k for word length, but the point is we have some fun times. Sometimes it's angsty, sometimes it's funny, and other times it's downright brilliant. This one pretty much blows a whole somewhere in the middle of the universe.

Therefore, I give you the drabble to read. Read, and then comment on how much you want a Palin/Putin/Simm Master fic, because you know that would be awesome incarnate. It might cause the world to implode, but it would so be worth it.

FINAL CHALLENGE! (Not under the cut because I managed to be fairly short this time!)

The Silence will fall.

So the final challenge isn't so much of a writing challenge, but a commenting challenge. When someone new comes in the TARDIS, the Doctor waits for that inevitable comment...  and he's always disappointed or thrown off when it doesn't happen.  So this challenge is about commenting on fics, because we wouldn't want to make the Doctor a sad panda, would we?

As someone who has gotten the dreaded silence from fics she has worked hard on, I can tell you that getting no comments really sucks. Like, really sucks.  You can work your butt off for a fic and it's discouraging when no one apparently cared enough to review.  Sure, your beta reader can fluff up your ego as much as they'd like, but you can't help but feel that somewhere under all that praise they're just trying to make you feel better and that the fic really isn't all that great. It's not until an uninterested party comes along and tells you that, hey, this is actually pretty decent, that some of those fears elevate.

I can also tell you that receiving reviews, even long after the fic has been posted, can really make a writer's day. Seriously, I've had some positively awful days before and coming in, and seeing that I at least made someone else happy has really brightened it. It doesn't even have to be a bad day for reviews to make me feel better. Heck, I know I've actually cried on a few rare occasions (not in the bad sense of crying, like it was a flame or something, but in the good one) when I've read a review that was particularly touching. I don't know of any writer that doesn't appreciate someone taking five minutes of their time to comment.

In most cases, the author spent at least a couple of hours writing this fic, if not weeks and months. It can't really be that hard to take a minute to give a fic some love before diving into the next fic you want to read to leave a comment? Being shy is no excuse! Just think of how much it took for the writer to actually post something! Odds are, if you're leaving a nice comment, then they'll only be happy.

The thing is, you can make a huge difference with a comment.  Me, I'll take a silence in stride and move on.  Sure, it's disappointing, but I've got enough confidence to just get on with the new fic and hope for a better reception next time.  I'm also used to writing odd fics that won't get a large readership anyway.  A lot of people don't have that sort of confidence in their writing though. Even just saying you enjoyed the fic could make a difference to them.

This is your final challenge: End the Silence and review and comment! Was there a joke you particularly liked in the fic? Point that out. Was the dialogue well-written? Point that out too. Can you pinpoint something in the fic that didn't actually work for you character-wise? Tell the author in a polite and respectful manner and they'll probably still love you for it anyway. Obviously, we're not going to get better if you don't tell us and maybe your comment will spur some writing growth. I know in my chapter fics, I've even added scenes because a reviewer said I was missing some detail or they wanted to see more of such and such.  Especially if the fic is lonely and un-commented upon, take it upon yourself to defeat the silence!

So go forth and make your opinions known! This is the internet, so there's not point in being shy.   Most of the time the writer is starving for the attention anyway.
