Why this must be read: There are certain things I’m biased towards when it comes to my reading pleasure. Structure is one of those things. Off-the-cuff WIPs are fun, sure, but I really love reading a story where I can see how each bit was thought out in advance and carefully placed, like a mosaic tile. Plot with lots mortal peril is another thing that earns my admiration. Give me a few explosions and I’m yours. And this story has both plenty of mortal peril and a beautifully intricate timey-wimey structure.

It has its dark moments as any plotty fic with the Master would, but I wouldn't classify it as darkfic. (Although there are some moments when it looks like it. And I will say no more to avoid spoiling.)

He ought to tell the Master he was crossing timelines, but he didn’t. He wanted this too much. Instead, he waited for the Master to speak, while they stood about ten feet apart in the little forest, the Master looking him over with a look that was oddly wary for reasons he couldn’t even begin to guess at.

‘You’re looking better,’ the Master offered at last, crossing his arms across his chest. ‘Where did you go?’

‘Oh, you know, here and there. Around and about,’ the Doctor said, mentally apologising to his future self for whatever he was blundering into. He really shouldn’t be here. ‘Actually, I was in the middle of something, I should go. I just popped back for a moment-’

‘You aren’t staying?’ the Master asked. He walked closer, eyes trained on him, expression perfectly blank except for one moment when his lips twisted and the filtered sunlight made him look – something else, the Doctor couldn’t tell.

‘Oh, I’ll come back. Just, you know, things came up. Some loose ends to tie off. I’ll pop there, pop back, you won’t even miss me.’

‘You’re lying,’ the Master said, stopping close enough to touch.

They both knew each other too well for the Doctor to try and claim he wasn’t. ‘Alright, yes,’ he said. ‘It’s sort of complicated…’

‘You hardly need to tell me that,’ the Master said. He was surveying the Doctor’s face, quick little flickers of his eyes as he examined his features, searching for something the Doctor could only guess at. ‘But you came back,’ he said, thoughtfully, and brought a hand up to the Doctor’s cheek.

It rested there as lightly as a promise, as hope, as the sunlight upon water. Just a single, simple touch, with a meaning the Doctor couldn’t begin to guess, and oh, he was out of his depth, and he knew it. ‘I really should go now,’ he said, swallowing.
