I was in chat yesterday and mentioned how I must get around to making some Crispy!Master Rice Krispie buns. To my absolute SHOCK and HORROR, I discovered that certain members (namely
alex_e_smith and
tula_peiwa ) had never even heard of Rice Krispie buns. My world was turned upside down. All certainties I had about the universe were destroyed. But it's okay, it's okay. If you didn't have Rice Krispie buns in your life before, you do now! Under the cut are a LOT of pictures and some instructions, because evidently there are some terribly deprived people out there. Don't worry. Your troubles are at an end.

1) Get your supplies! It's not very complicated: you just need some Rice Krispies or an equivalent and some chocolate (preferably cooking chocolate). The shop around the corned from me didn't have any cooking chocolate, but it's probably better if you can get some. Apart from those two basics, I've also got some red icing to do his face and M&Ms for eyes. If you have anything else that'll do the job (Smarties, yellow icing, red string liquorish stuff, whatever) that's fine too. The glam rock is optional, but it will add a nice flavour of extra crack to the process.

2) To another layer to the culinary pun of a Rice Crispy bun, I bought crispy M&Ms to use as his eyes. I think you should do that too. :D

3) Pick out a dish and a pot to use. The dish needs to be big enough to hold all of the Rice Krispies you use, and it needs to be able to sit safely in/on the pot. Put water in the pot; use enough to make a water bath for the dish, but not so much it splashes up when you take the dish out. Once you have a safe amount of water, put the dish in and start boiling the water. As it boils you should break the chocolate into its squares and then chop it into little pieces.

4) When you have your chocolate chopped up dump it in the heating dish. Remember to stir it every so often! Heating it in a dish means it won't burn, but it could still stick to the sides if you don't check.

5) Melty melty!

6) When it's all melted remove the dish from the pot. It'll be hot for obvious reasons, so use a teatowel or oven gloves or something like that to pick it up. Add in some Rice Krispies, but don't over-do it. If you add too many then there won't be enough chocolate to bind them together and your buns will fall apart. You can always add more, but you can't take them out. On the other hand, you do need enough to take all the chocolate. My Crispy buns turned out nice and solid, so you can use this picture and the next one as a visual guide.

7) Mixing time. Evenly distribute your chocolate! Otherwise your Crispy buns will be less tasty, fall apart, and look weird(er).

8) TIME TO BREAK OUT THE SPOONS. One for scooping, one for scraping. Both of them are for shaping. If you have little paper bun cup things you can just dollop the mixture in there. If you are like me and you don't, then cover a tray or something with tinfoil and put little piles of the mixture on it. Because the chocolate is still hotish its sticking power will be minimal and you'll need to pat them together with your spoons. Make sure the buns are properly separated, because otherwise you'll need to cut them apart when they set.

9) YAY CRISPY BUNS. If you're using things that have to be stuck in, like M&Ms rather than icing, make sure to stick them in now while the chocolate is still setting.

10) As a reward for your hard work, you now get to clean the bowl and spoons with your FACE. I would say mouth, but once you get to the bowl it's just going to go everywhere. Warm melty chocolate with crispy bits? It's worth developing a chocolate beard for. For those who have lived deprived lives, this is a big reason Rice Krispie buns are made for every child's birthday party ever. Except yours.

11) Before and after. YUM. :D

12) While you wait for the buns to cool a little you will have ample time to clean off whatever chocolate remains on the dish and the spoons.

13) ICING TIEM YEYZ.

14) My little army of iced Crispies, complete with an amusing variety of expressions and creepy bulging eyes.

15) CRISPY IS NOT HAPPY

16) NEITHER IS OTHER CRISPY

17) Put your tray of Crispies somewhere well out of the way, as it will take several hours for them to set. I finished these guys at about a quarter past six, and I didn't remove them from the tinfoil until around half ten. If you're not sure, the best thing is to just make them in the evening and leave them overnight. Once you're sure they're fully rigid, they can be carefully peeled off the tinfoil.

18) Congratulations! You've just made some tasty Crispy buns.

19) AND THEN YOU EAT THEM.
