Welcome to my first drabble-rec! Longer fics will be reserved for Monday-Wednesday-Friday, while Tuesdays and Thursdays will have drabble recs and a challenge. Yeah, I really did mean it when I said you'd be hearing a lot from me these two weeks. Odds are you will be sick of me by the time I'm finished.
When I call this a drabble-rec... Well, do not be fooled, dear comm members. There is a very large possibility I will still take up just as much space talking. One should always be weary of giving Memory a reason to talk. Bearing that in mind, let us get a start on the first one!
Title: None that I can find, written for the ¡Viva la Revolución! challenge awhile back.
Pairing: Six/Ainley Master, Evelyn
Length: 350~ish
Summary: Livejournal is down and the Doctor is very put out.
Warnings: Highly awesome Six and Evelyn
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian):
tardiscrash
Why this must be read:
When I saw the challenge to do something with the recent DDoS attacks on lj, I had a plot already in mind. Picture the Doctor, upset over his favorite site being down. What does he do? Obviously, drag whatever poor companion he had at the time to go find out what was behind it.
tardiscrash just beat me to it. <3
Granted, our fics had a different cause of the DDoS from the beginning, but still. Great minds think alike.
We also think different. While mine was Ten and Donna, tardiscrash did an absolutely lovely Six and Evelyn. Now, I've only ever actually seen one Six serial (which was the Two Doctors, so technically not even a fully Six serial), but I am a little BFA fangirl. Evelyn has to be one of my all time favorite companions. Ever. Seriously, to me, for all intents and purposes, she is canon. By extension, I also love Audio Six for whom she is such a perfect foil for.
That's why I do so love it when anything comes along that happens to have a lovely Evelyn voice. This not only fits that bill, but has a equally lovely Six voice. I think I squeed while reading this, if just for the voices alone. That, and I love the mental image painted of Six in his pj's. <3
I can't find anywhere else that has the drabble, so you get the quickly uploaded and typo filled version. Still, it's extremely amusing. Forgive the typos and read it anyway!

Challenge time! (under an lj cut so it's not quite as flist spam-y)
Let me start off by saying, no, I don't actually expect a response to these challenges (though I wouldn't be adverse to them at all, quite the contrary! I'd love responses! Discussions would be equally lovely). I do hope that they will make you think when you start up your next fic. These are just things I've noticed either lacking in fic that I'd like to see more of, or simply find fun. I'll be adding a lot of my own experience with fic in as examples, if just to prove that they are indeed possible. I adore a good challenge and try to find new ways to shake up my writing all the time. Hopefully, this will give you some food for thought. So on to the first challenge!
Reversing the Polarity
Role reversals, or simply reversing the usual fanfic trope can be a excellent way of spicing things up. Everyone has read that fic of the Doctor being seduced by the Master. And the one of him being seduced after that. And the one after that. And probably about five more plus whatever other kinks are added on. It's a tried and true trope that is wonderful because it does work. However, what about the reverse? There's a lovely prompt over on the anon meme about Fivey seducing Ainley Master for once, and it pretty much embodies this challenge. Do something different with the trope. Flip it around on its head and reverse that polarity. I promise you, Three will adore you for it.
Now, some reversals you might just think are impossible. I find there's a fine line between impossible and improbable. The Doctor walks it all the time. He's even admitted he's not impossible... just highly unlikely. <3 I think you'll find that if you take your time and try to really characterize the hell out of the Doctor and Master, you can justify just about anything. Do it well and no one will think twice about it.
Why should you do it? That's a very good question. Mainly, it keeps the trope fresh. Some of you may remember an anon response I wrote about the Doctor and Master's 'first time.' One of the responses I got to it thanked me for not using any of the normal 'first time tropes'. Honestly, I had no idea there were tropes for that sort of thing when I started writing that response. I'm sure they exist on the interwebs somewhere, but I still haven't a clue of what those tropes would be (and if anyone would like to explain them to me, I'm actually a little curious). That gave me an edge to the fic that I hadn't even realized I had, simply because it was different from other fics along the same lines.
That concept lends itself well to reversals. Yes, there are absolutely lovely fics that follow tropes to a T. They're tropes for a reason and we generally like them, especially when they are magnificently done. However, trying something different with the standard makes a fic standout. Do it well and you're pretty much guaranteed a memorable fic. Am I saying you have to be a master fic writer to attempt this? Nah. But go ahead and give it a shot. Sometimes, you'll end up with things that aren't worth posting. It happens to everyone on occasion, including me, more often than not. However, you might just find that you've written a gem. You'll never know until you try it, right? The current b_e drabble prompts are all cliches as well, so you've got no excuse not to try something.
So go forth, my friends! Give reversals a shot and make Three proud!
