Discussion Questions:
The Rules: Be freely off topic and respond to any you feel like! Or none! Or just write comment crack/porn, since I had a lot of fun reading that last time and maybe you did too?
Think these questions are lame? I'm running out and we never talk about the actual questions anyway. Feel free to offer up some of your own in the comments and I'll edit the posts accordingly. 1) I found a tidbit in
selenak's meta on
Planet of Fire (in which she's quoting
bimo) really interesting, and I thought I'd toss it out as a question:
"The Five/Ainley!Master dynamic is not a Yin/Yang or shadow doppelganger one as with Three/Delgado!Master or Ten/Simm!Master, it's a bad fairy godmother/ haunted child one, helped by the age difference of the actors as well." Do you agree? If not how are you reading Five/Ainley!Master?
Those two dynamics, if you accept that breakdown, represent a pretty fundamentally different relationship. Do you think of these as disparate directions for Doctor/Master to go in, or are they somehow connected, forming a continuum? If the latter, how's that continuum functioning? What pushes them from being twinned to being very 'shades of
Der Erlkönig' (
man is that one homoerotic poem/lieder) to back to being twinned again?
2) It might be possible to find one dynamic compelling and not be terribly into the alternate. In a larger sense, is it legitimate to not really enjoy/slash whole Incarnations of their lives (not necessarily 'what are your favorites,' though that could be interesting too--more 'are there discrete pairings of them within the show you ABSOLUTELY do not care about/see in any way'), or do you
have to look at the pairing in terms of them as broader individuals than just their current regenerations/presentation?
3) Why does no one write Doctor/Master Rift Fic? I'm stealing 'Rift' from the Smallville fandom, a la
arysteia, the term apparently meaning "the inevitable hideous final breakup, ie transition from BFF (and boyfriends) to rain of toads evil and sneering good." Are we just intimidated by it, freaked out by canon issues, or Busy With Other Stuff? Is it because some people assume a drifting apart rather than An Epic Blowout, and thus Camp Driftwood doesn't feel like they want to pen Rift Fic? Should this, eventually, be a Challenge?
