While we're voting on Three Era episodes, I might as well drop this off here. My next rec, representing Three/Delgado!Master and darkfic. (For the record, I love darkfic and the Doctor/Master pairing has a lot of great darkfic to choose from, but it's mostly in the form of Simm or Ainley. Delgado!Master, genteel adversary that he is, usually doesn't come with darkfic.)

Pairing: Three/Delgado!Master
Length: Three chapters, middle to longish. At a guess, maybe 35K?
Warnings: character death

Why this must be read: This is another story that taps into my love of long, plotty, and well structured fics. It was also one of the first Three/Delgado!Master fics that I read; the fic that made me love the pairing. (And why are there not more Three/Delgado!Master fics in the world?) This darkfic is a lovely, bitter-sweet dark, like chocolate. Delgado!Master is appropriately wicked in the way every incarnation of the Master is wicked, but even through the darkness, there are scenes that are adorable in the way that Delgado!Master is adorable. Add to that an overarching theme of language and communication, and I’m sold. (And there’s some Gallifreyan linguistic details, too. Proclitics make me hot and bothered and possessive proclitics are the sexiest thing on earth.)

I wonder,” the Master continued, still taking in the crown molding, “Every hour, if this will be the one. If this is when you fall. If you’re going to give in because you want to, or because you can see how much your refusal pains me, and how childishly stupid it is to deny me, and yourself. Either would do. I’d prefer both, naturally, but then I so rarely get what I want with you.”

The Doctor curled his fingers down over the Master’s knuckles, silently sympathetic, but firm. Unwavering.

“Not tonight then,” the Master conceded. “Well. Goodnight then, Doctor.”

They had a million tomorrows between them, and sometimes he could see them, stretched out before them like infinity. And on those nights he was patient.
