What's that you say? You've always wanted a mashup of "Time Crash" with "The Raven"?

I'm not sure exactly how historical this is, but it had to be done. Also it is surely the fault of [livejournal.com profile] elviaprose, whose Three/Delgado "Highwayman" parody was made of finest win.

Some of you read this little Ten/Cheetah one-off thing I did, and wanted more Ten/Cheetah stuff, and said so. And now there is more! Moral of the story: be careful what you wish for.

At any rate, here it is:

Unknown Quantities

Rating: Teen
Genre: This is about the fluffiest thing I've ever written. Which isn't saying much, really.
Length: 5,400-ish
Summary: A sequel of sorts to "Symbiosis," in which Ten comes to terms with the cheetahfied Master lurking in his garden.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] neveralarch and [livejournal.com profile] dragonofmemory for beta-reading this here fic. Many appreciations.

Title: Like Old Times
Pairing: Simm!Master/Ten, Koschei/Theta
Length: 21,300
Summary: language, snark, mild violence, sexual situations, spoilers through DW S4
Warnings: The Master breaks things in the TARDIS until the Doctor almost goes insane, then they end up in the Vivarium, and then all hell breaks loose. The Doctor is not liking any of this – and while he's at it, the dream-flashback-things really, really need to stop.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): [livejournal.com profile] tierfallen, who has a fic community at [livejournal.com profile] tierfal, and is on AO3
Why this must be read:

There's a lot to love about this story. The banter between the Doctor and the Master, first and foremost! [livejournal.com profile] tierfallen has a great grasp of their voices, making the dialogue natural and in character. Besides that, it's just plain witty and fun to read. Even the telepathic banter is excellent, both because it is entertaining and because [livejournal.com profile] tierfal takes an interesting approach to their telepathy that is different from what I have seen before, making it primarily a dialogue of mental images, rather than words. Even the interactions between the Master and the TARDIS were brilliant and made me laugh.

I loved the way the story started, with the Master creatively breaking random things, not so much to a purpose but just to cause random chaos. The Doctor's mixed exasperation, trepidation, and relief at having the distraction of fixing things in response was great.

As well as being remarkable for the characterization and dialogue, this story is also a good scary adventure! I don't want to give too much away about what happens, but the reveal of what is going on was great. The pacing and suspense are very well done in this, making the story a very exciting read!

Title: Here Come the Drums
Pairing: Gen.
Length: 2:46
Warnings: None.
Musical Artist: the Cloister Belles on YouTube
Why this must be heard:

I adore this song. The recording quality isn't perfect, but the lovely vocal talents of the Cloister Belles mean I don't really mind! The lyrics are great, and the song itself has excellent momentum. It's a very driving, energetic piece of music. In term of the content, it's Simm!Master of the end of 'Utopia' and 'Sound of Drums' addressing the Doctor, so the energy level and sometimes taunting tone seem appropriate. It's a really fun song! I hope you'll give this a listen!

Title: The Ravages of Eternity
Pairing: Tenth Doctor/ Simm!Master (slight twisted Doctor/Rose; one-sided Jack/Doctor, Donna/Martha; vague Mickey/Martha)
Length: 72,686
Summary: The Master reluctantly agrees to help the Doctor on a desperate quest to stop the End of Time. Together, they travel across the stars one final time in a twisted truce that strains them both and crosses old boundaries.
Warnings: Vague sexual scenes, dark themes, mild swearing, violence, death, a misleading and manipulative relationship, and minor gore.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): sariane on FFN
Why this must be read:

This is a quite AU take on the End of Time. It has a sort of quest-style plot, like the Key to Time, in which the Doctor and the Master endeavor to retrieve all the pieces of the white point star diamond, which the Doctor used as the seal to the Time War. It involves Edgar Allen Poe, Torchwood, hallucinatory ex-companions, actual ex-companions, flirting through Harry Potter references, and difficult ethical choices.

I love really long fics, which this certainly is. This is an engrossing story. I love the creative way sariane explained and repurposed the white point star in this. Sariane's story structure allows for the incorporation of many genre and style elements throughout this long story. The writing is descriptive and I really love some of the dialogue between the Doctor and the Master.

Title: The End of the Universe (Chantho's Song)
Pairing: Mentions unrequited Chantho/Professor Yana.
Length: 3:16
Warnings: None.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): Tom Milsom
Why this must be heard:

It's a song about Professor Yana! Musically, this song is a bit different from those I've recommended so far. No guitar. Keyboard and electronic elements instead. It tends to put me in an introspective state of mind. I like the lyrics quite a bit. It's nice to have a song that is focused on 'Utopia', rather than just mentioning it in relation to the events of the following episodes.

Title: Zombie Plan
Pairing: Third Doctor/Delgado Master
Length: ~2,100
Summary: Original Prompt: Three/Delgado. The Master has once again attempted to Summon Stuff, and it has once again gone wrong. Except that this time he was attempting necromancy, and as a result, a plague of zombies is sweeping England. He and the Doctor have to work together to overcome the zombie hordes. Extra points for Jo and the Brig, and as much crack as you can cram in at the seams.
Warnings: Silliness, with a bit of angst.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): Memory Dragon. [livejournal.com profile] dragonofmemory on LJ.
Why this must be read:

Memory Dragon has a wonderful talent for writing the Third Doctor era characters. I can always see and hear them clearly in my head as I read her stuff. I love the premise of UNIT fighting zombies. I love the Doctor telling the Brigadier off for not having a zombie apocalypse plan. I love that the Doctor has a zombie apocalypse plan! Basically, there's a lot to love about this fic.

The Master's fear of the Time Lord mythological equivalent of a zombie was particularly poignant and made me wince in sympathy. Really, all of this fic leaves me with the urge to hug Delgado!Master. This story is great fun to read!

Title: You Are Not Alone
Pairing: Gen.
Length: 5:05
Warnings: None.
Musical Artist: songsfrompaul, KronksSpinachPuffs on YouTube
Why this must be seen/heard:

This tells the story of the end of Series 3, from Utopia to Last of the Time Lords, from the Master's point of view, and the person being addressed is the Doctor. It is presented in the form of a music video by the artist for the prerecorded song, so it sort of brings in cosplay as well. I really enjoy the song. I really enjoy some of the lines from the lyrics, and I just really like the song overall.

Title: after me comes the flood
Pairing: Tenth Doctor/Simm!Master
Length: 11,641
Summary: In which the Doctor tries very hard to save the Master, and the universe, and maybe even himself. A retelling of The End of Time.
Warnings/Rating: PG-13.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): Aria. [livejournal.com profile] ariafic on LJ. ariafic on DW. Aria at AO3.
Why this must be read:

This story is beautiful. Aria's writing is lyrical, evocative, and sometimes heart-wrenching. The characterizations of the Doctor and Master are thoughtful and engrossing. Reading this story is at once painful and uplifting. I adore it.

I really enjoy the way this story begins. It gives us glimpses of the things that the Doctor did in the time between the end of Waters of Mars and the beginning of End of Time. These are such wonderful little vignettes and they give a view into the Doctor's state of mind that I really enjoy. I feel that this story is about change, first and foremost. The Doctor spends most of the time in the story dreading his predicted regeneration, as well as fearing what he might change into if he allows himself to slip again, as he did in Waters of Mars. But with change comes hope and the possibility for something better.

Continuing with the theme, my musical rec is also a retelling of The End of Time.

Title: The Doctor and the Master
Pairing: Gen.
Length: 4:35
Warnings: None.
Musical Artist: Dr. Noise
Why this must be heard:

Because it's a duet between the Doctor and the Master (sung by one person doing both parts). It is so many of the things I loved about End of Time in musical form, without the things that made me cringe. I'd wanted something like this song ever since seeing EoT, and was thrilled when I saw that Dr. Noise had put out this song! It's fast-paced, and really enjoyable. I think the format is well suited to telling the story.

I'm very sorry I'm so late getting started with my recs, everyone! There should be no further delays.

For my short series of recs, I will be recommending something literary and something musical on each post. Musical, you ask? Yes. I will be recommending songs written by fans of Doctor Who about the show. This is commonly called Trock (Timelord Rock), in the style of Wizard Rock, which you may be familiar with if you have spent time in the Harry Potter fandom. I possess no musical talent whatsoever, so I am kind of in awe of some of the songs that have been produced in our fandom!

Title: The Amazon
Pairing: Delgado!Master/Four
Length: ~9,500
Summary: Jo made a poor choice in husbands, the Master made a poor choice in building materials, and the Doctor's gone off in a scarf.
Warnings: language, off-screen sex
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): [livejournal.com profile] neveralarch, neveralarch (on Teaspoon), neveralarch (on AO3)
Why this must be read:

This story is quite possibly my favorite thing to come from the anon meme, which is saying quite a bit! Both the Jo and Delgado!Master voices are strong and distinctly them, which makes me savor every interaction between them. I think I could happily read their adventures forever. Whether it's Jo speculating about whether the Master's name is something ridiculous, taking him shopping for clothing with too many feathers on it, or expounding on his relationship with the Doctor while he quietly wishes for the ceiling to cave in on him so he can escape the conversation, Jo is so entertaining as his traveling companion. Jo's theories get in his head, and he can't ignore them.

As if all of that weren't awesome enough, this story also has the Fourth Doctor, which the world really needs more of. There are so many excellent, witty lines in this story. I like the thematic thread of poorly considered relationship decisions running throughout the fic. In fact, this story also has a wonderful prequel called "The Honeymooners" about another such bad relationship choice, mentioned in passing in "The Amazon."

"You know, back when we were locked up on your space ship, I tried to tell him. Doctor, I said, he does keep trying to give you half of the universe. Maybe you should be a little nicer. But he was too busy escaping to listen to me."

"Thank you for pleading my case," said the Master. He stared up at the ceiling, willing it to drop down on him before he had to listen to another word of Jo's completely ridiculous idea of relationship advice.

"And then after that," said Jo, "you'd shot him and disappeared. I told him your hand must have slipped, but he was too busy being upset about the Daleks."

"Was he," said the Master. The ceiling was not cooperating. He began to weigh the actual disadvantages of just throttling Jo.

"Yes, and I have to tell you, I'd avoid them if you want to get back together. The Doctor really hates the Daleks."

Title: The Sound of Drums
Pairing: Gen.
Length: 5:55
Warnings: None.
Musical Artist: Chameleon Circuit (at DFTBA and at Itunes)
Why this must be heard:

This song is part of Chameleon Circuit's second album, Still Got Legs. The band member lineup changed slightly between albums, and the new member Eddplant brought this song along with him (he had done an earlier version of it previously).  This version is spectacular. It sounds wonderful. (So does the whole album!) Essentially, it tells the story of the end of Series 3 in the Master's voice, with a brief and lovely interjection from the Doctor. I promise you you won't be able to listen to it only once!

Link to the song: it can be listened to at the blogs of a couple of the band members. Here or here.

Title: The Dark Path
Author: David A. McIntee
Why this must be read:

Okay, so today is a little different. I'm not reccing you a drabble or something easily accessible... but at the same time, I feel more people need to read this. For one thing, it adds more Delgado Master into the universe and I happen to like the idea of him and Two far more than Two and Warchief. For another... You know you've always wanted something like this in canon. It's the closest we've got currently and it really is a lovely backstory for him. Not to mention it's where we get the name Koschei from.

It is, in short, a look at the Master before he was evil and, well, the Master. One of the things the novel does brilliantly is show the Master in his non-evil stage and yet still being very recognizably the Master. While I was reading the beginning bits, I kept waiting for Koschei to start doing something dastardly and nefarious because he was so in character. I was almost shocked to find that his glorious plan was doing much the same as the Doctor and trying to stop the evil people. Just with less running around and kilts. At the same time, you could see why the Doctor had been such good friends/lovers with him, because he is brilliant and clever (if not quite as moral, well, the Doctor wasn't a saint when he started out either. He might have gotten there) and everything that we all love about the Delgado Master.

Which isn't to say he's characterized perfectly. His attachment to the character Ailla, for example, didn't convince me at all at a certain spoilerish point and that made some of the scenes not quite as believable as they should have been. Also, sadly, the book doesn't get nearly as into the Master's head as he's becoming the Master as it really ought to have. The lack of Koschei/Doctor interaction in general will also make you want to cry. I think there's like, two scenes where they're actually together and the first is just them shaking hands and going off again? The second being the big scene at the end where Koschei is evil. It was one of the major downsides to the book, actually.

However, the character voices for pretty much everyone are astonishingly good. I've been told many times I have an excellent Delgado Master voice... and I'm telling you now I developed it largely because of this book. You can hear not only the Master talking while you're reading, but Two and Jamie and Victoria, all of them written to a T. The plot itself almost as complicated as one the Master's schemes, but unlike with The Face of the Enemy (which was written by the same author and had a lot more characterization flaws, in my opinion, along with the over complicated plot), the overcomplicated-ness doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the story itself.

Plus, Victoria. My God, Victoria. She steals the plot, the little thief, but she does it beautifully. If memory serves, there's a prompt in the anon meme about a companion spending time with the Master and finding that they like him better to the Doctor. That's basically what happens with Victoria and it's used to a heartbreaking end. Through her we see all of Koschei's good characteristics... and through her we meet all of the Master's bad ones.

In short, it's not perfect, but it's well worth the read if you can get your hands on it.  For the except, I give you one of my all time favorite descriptions of the Master. Only Two could get away with calling him a 'fusspot'. <3

Excerpt:

He went over to the pearlescent structure that Koschei had called a time-flow analogue. ‘This is certainly some kind of temporal stasis...’ The Doctor poked at the monolith, watching as ripples of light spread out from where his fingers touched it. ‘I’ve never seen anything on quite this sort of scale, though.’

Victoria wondered whether she should pull the Doctor’s hand away from the smooth ore. ‘Doctor, be careful. Koschei said this was very precisely balanced.’

‘Did he?’ The Doctor cleared his throat. ‘Well, he’s always been a terrible old fusspot, you know; he doesn’t like to actually do anything until after he’s prepared and planned and measured and all of that sort of thing.’

Which was exactly the sort of proper preparation that Edward Waterfield had taught his daughter. ‘That sounds quite sensible to me.’

‘Yes, but really there’s no substitute for, er, you know, having a go and seeing what happens.’ He flexed his fingers and cracked his knuckles, like a pianist about to embark on a long and complicated concerto. ‘Now don’t worry, Victoria, I know what I’m doing.’

‘Then you know what this is?’

‘Oh yes.’ She looked on sceptically, and he shrugged. ‘Well, not exactly,’ he admitted, ‘but I have seen some rather similar types of thing.’

Extra: Also, since you might not be able to get your hands on that one, I give you a fan video that highly amused me yesterday.  It's got nothing to do with the Master (then again, he's probably behind it all!) so I can take it down if the mods see fit, but it has come to my attention that this com has a thing for felines.  I figure it might be relevant to our interests.

Challenge time! (under the cut because I'm really making these far too long...)

Hey, sorry, I meant to get these out days ago but life got busy (why on earth do people work and why did nobody warn me?) and then whenever I did have a few minutes Lj seemed to just die on me.

Anyway, as an apology, have some fics.

Title:
The Thousand Natural Shocks
Pairing: Ten/Simm
Length: 8,600 words
Summary: Now, just when the Master has finally worked out how to die, the Doctor has apparently forgotten.
Warnings: None provided, I will say that it gets a little dark and kind of creepy in a few places.
Author on LJ:
soda_and_capes
Why this must be read:
Because its incredible? The Master is crazy and the Doctor is broken and creepy and, actually, this kind of makes more sense than most of the Season of Specials, or maybe it makes them make more sense. I'm not sure. But it takes little pieces from Utopia to End of Time, and squishes them together into a really strong, cohesive fic. The fic feels familiar and in some places and rather strongly ironic and darkly amusing in others. The Doctor/Master aspects are pretty subdued, but still obvious when you notice them, and quite touching because they're so subtly inserted.

Excerpt:

Please let me help
. The Master thinks the Doctor must have suddenly acquired a sense of humor. He watches the shock roll across the Doctor's face as the what have you become resolves itself into horrible realization. The Master tries to echo the look, when all he can really feel is joy at the mess the Doctor's mind is beaming straight into his. What have you become? Time breaks in shallow waves around the Doctor, snapping and twitching. It's gorgeous. The Master hopes it's at least partially his fault.

And so the Master runs. Because the Doctor is running toward him, not away, and the physics of it just take over the Master's body, equal and opposite.

He is so hungry.

Title:
Redirection
Pairing: Eleven/Simm
Length: 1,900
Summary: "Don't be clever," the Master says, rolling his eyes, and raises the gun, and shoots.
Warnings: Hmmm. Ten regenerates? Not sure if that even counts as a warning, but whatever.
Author on AO3:
bluestalking
Why this must be read:
It's really, really good. It's short, it’s funny, and it’s a nice way to get the morning on track. And this is one of the easiest reads I had lately (in a very good way). The Master is sarcastic and funny, 10 is himself and I should really hurry up and comment on this.

Excerpt:

"Master--" the Doctor starts--mm, the Master closes his eyes, he does like hearing his name-- "Master, I will care in every lifetime. Don't you see that?"

"You're mad," the Master says simply, and bursts into giggles. Isn't he ironic.

"Maybe," says the Doctor, which shuts the Master up for just a second.

The gap closes up behind them. The Time Lords are gone. Gallifrey is receding into unbeing in the Earth sky. Old man locked in the cupboard. The Doctor still won't look away. Big damn cow eyes.

You can also have some vids.

Title:
Doctor Who: The Master's Love Letter
Pairing: Four/Ainley
Length: 2:20
Warnings: You will either be scarred for life or giggle for weeks.
Creator:
solidbronze
Why it must be watched: Um, real, honest to god audio by Ainley (and Tom a little) overlaid with things like the sounds of zippers being unzipped and people smooching and the Doctor saying that he's "just a bit to sexy, really". If you ever wanted to know what Ainley would have said to Four if he ever wrote him a love letter, then this is for you. If you haven't then watch it anyway and feel your mind boggle.

Quotes:
"Peoples of the universe please attend carefully, the message that follows is vital to the future of you all."
"Doctor, since my heart is sick with longing, I would all the more wish you to understand that in my eyes, you are as immaculate and as radiant as ever."
"Perhaps this little demonstration will give you some glimpse of my real power ... Zzziiippppp"

Title:
Doctor Who End of Time SPOOF: Doctor would you like to...
Pairing: Ten/Simms (that is not a typo)
Length: 0:25
Warnings: None
Creator:
Pullapitkomies
Why it must be watched: Because I can't believe that I haven't seen this before. I mean this is Brilliant, Fantastic and Cool.

The final vid wasn't going to be included, because it would reveal my no-longer secret semi-fondness for Miley Cyrus, but the end credits imply that Five and Ainley should have been there and despite watching the vid three times in a row, I can't find them. So, first person to find them wins a cookie.

Title:
Doctor Who - See You Again
Pairing: Ten/Simm, maybe Five/Ainley
Length: 3:14

Why it must be watched: Secret Five/Ainley hidden somewhere in the vid. Surprising level of fittingness (ssshhh it is too a word). Because I no-longer-secretly like Miley Cyrus.

Okay. I feel like I've made amends somewhat. In a few days I'll put out recs: the mpreg edition because I found a surprising amount of stuff and I not-so-secretly like mpreg.

The Doctor defeats the Empress of the Rachnoss and meets Donna. Towards the end of the episode the Empress is killed by military on the direct order to fire from Saxon. Title: Parallax
Author: kyrilu
Fandom: Doctor Who and a little bit of Torchwood
Type: Fanfiction.
Rating: PG.  Nothing triggering.
Characters: Tenth Doctor, Simm!Master, Captain Jack Harkness; Torchwood team, Theta, and Koschei alluded to as well
Pairings: Doctor/Master; tiny smidgen of Doctor/Jack
Episodes: Just after “The Last of the Time Lords.”  And somewhen before “Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang” for Torchwood?
Summary: There will be a day when the world will outgrow the Doctor.  Doctor/Master.
A/N: Sadly unbetaed.  This story is sadly random, however - scene breaks and switching is used unashamedly.  And the conversation between Jack and the Doctor feels really, really weak - I don’t think I have the characterization nailed down.
