Song: Written in the Stars
Song Artist: Tinie Tempah
Characters/Pairings: The Master. (Delgado, Ainley, Roberts, Goosnake, Jacobi[Yana, not Shalka-verse], Simm.) It's Doctor/Master in that it's about the Master, and therefore involves the Doctor. And the Master. Interacting. As they do. If that isn't enough, let me know and I'll remove this post with a few groveling apologies.

Title: But the battle is lost
Pairing: Thirteenth Doctor/Professor Yana
Length: 920 words
Summary: Meme prompt: Yana/thirteenth Doctor. Mortality.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): bagheera_san
Why this must be read:
I do feel a bit like I'm cheating, Bagheera is one of those authors whose masterlist I could pretty much just link do fine in terms of a good rec. Still, that really would be cheating, so here's a favorite of mine. Bagheera gives her Yana depth that doesn't fight with what canon left us, and manages to paint a convincing, tragic but not over-tragic original Doctor. I know there are people who shrink from Original Doctor stories, and if you are one I encourage you to read through this fic. My love for well crafted short fics may also play a part. This story is exceptionally well put together and very satisfying to read and reread.
Excerpt:
Unfettered by madness, and not cloaked in cold civility, Yana is vibrant, immediate, alive. In one hand he holds the little present the Doctor built him, an ad hoc demonstration of why he is worthy of Yana's attention. The other hand flitters almost shakily over the Doctor's body, unbuttoning cuffs and brushing away his collar, checking vitals and temperature. One moment he mutters about genius, the next the exclaims about the double beat, the alien body, the living miracles of the dying world.

Title: The Sound of Drums
Band: Chameleon Circuit
Video by: 2Scribble
Pairing:All canon D/M pairings.
Length: 5:43
Summary: Video set to an edited version of "The Sound of Drums" by Chameleon Circuit. Features all of the canon Masters and includes edited in audio clips from each one.
Rating: G
Why this must be watched: Very well-done video including all of the Masters. The added audio clips actually work well with the song and help make the video about all of the Masters, not just Simm. It's a nice portrait of the character. And the song is awesome!

I was babbling about this on the friending meme and on my journal so I figured I'd inflict it on everyone... themed tea!

A little about Adagio Tea )

I've come up with blends for most incarnations of the Master, all with Lapsang Souchoung as the uniting theme.

Koschei

Delgado!Master

Crispy!Master (I already ordered myself a bag of this, and so did someone else, but I'm not sure who!)

Ainley!Master

Sadly, I don't think Shalka!Master can have tea, and Roberts!Master seems like a Folgers guy. And if the cats I know are anything to go by, Cheetah!Master would want green tea.

Professor Yana

Simm!Master

Here's the thing... no way can I come up with blends for all the Doctors and every possible pairing as well, and that would be neat to have! Who's with me?

And if anyone needs an Adagio first time certificate... I can get you one, and please please please, other Adagio customers speak up so we can spread the kickbacks around ;)

...mods, if this isn't appropriate, I'm sorry and will take it down right away.

ETA: Adagio is US-based; they probably ship worldwide but I don't know how reasonable a shipping rate they have outside the US. Disclaimers I should have added; if people (even if it's me!) buy my blends, I get points toward free tea, which is all the more reason for some of you to join me in coming up with them, I'm not selfish like that.

...shutting up now, I'm babbling. And hoping someone invents a Seven/Delgado!Master blend.

Good Day, Ladies, Gentlemen, and those of the 26 genders of Metabelix 9. My name is RF93, and I am to be your latest Reccer.

I would like to speak to you briefly on the subject of Doctor/Master Fanvids.

Now I'm sure many or most of you will have seen the worst this category has to offer, shoddily constructed affairs set to pop or rock songs, looping the same three scenes from 'Last of the Time Lords' a half a dozen times.

While these can be entertaining, I understand that the fine members of B_E are a certain level of connoisseur, and expect nothing but the best for their viewing pleasure.

To that effect, I wish to introduce, or rather remind my readers that while we are fortunate enough to have extraordinary authors and remarkable artists, Doctor/Master fandom is host to several excellent fanvids of both old and new D/M varieties.

As with most fanfiction of this pairing, two basic genres of vid exist. For the purposes of this review, I have chosen one of each category.

The Epic: Space Dementia by nastally
Pairing: All Doctor/Master, emphasis on New Who.
Why It Should Be Watched: The creator describes this as her Magnum Opus, and it truly is. The editing is beautiful, with some of the best timing and cuts I have ever seen, set to slightly haunting music. While not a fast paced video, it does not give the feeling of slowing or growing repetetive throughout its six minute run, the artist using every era and (my favorite gimmick), well incorporated quotes from the show to paint one of the best psychological and historical profiles of this pairing.
Warnings: Leaves that wonderfully slightly sad and disturbed feeling in the pit of your stomach that only the best fics and artwork do.

The Crack: Drop Dead Gorgeous by GeckoGoose
Pairing: All Doctor/Masters up to 'LotTL'
Why It Should Be Watched: In the way that only sometime crack!fic and vids can do, this is a perfect representation of Doctor/Master, (to say nothing of Doctor/Master Fandom) through the years. With every canonized version of both our Best Enemies, quick and playful editing and above all, perhaps the catchiest song with remarkably relevant lyrics since ABBA's Mamma Mia. While highly under appreciated at only 1200 views, this is perhaps one of the best in D/M Crack!vids.
Warnings: No, seriously. This song will stick in your head whether you love it or hate it.

Thank you for your time. Please continue to enjoy your LiveJournal Experience.

Title: The Ravages of Eternity
Pairing: Tenth Doctor/ Simm!Master (slight twisted Doctor/Rose; one-sided Jack/Doctor, Donna/Martha; vague Mickey/Martha)
Length: 72,686
Summary: The Master reluctantly agrees to help the Doctor on a desperate quest to stop the End of Time. Together, they travel across the stars one final time in a twisted truce that strains them both and crosses old boundaries.
Warnings: Vague sexual scenes, dark themes, mild swearing, violence, death, a misleading and manipulative relationship, and minor gore.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): sariane on FFN
Why this must be read:

This is a quite AU take on the End of Time. It has a sort of quest-style plot, like the Key to Time, in which the Doctor and the Master endeavor to retrieve all the pieces of the white point star diamond, which the Doctor used as the seal to the Time War. It involves Edgar Allen Poe, Torchwood, hallucinatory ex-companions, actual ex-companions, flirting through Harry Potter references, and difficult ethical choices.

I love really long fics, which this certainly is. This is an engrossing story. I love the creative way sariane explained and repurposed the white point star in this. Sariane's story structure allows for the incorporation of many genre and style elements throughout this long story. The writing is descriptive and I really love some of the dialogue between the Doctor and the Master.

Title: The End of the Universe (Chantho's Song)
Pairing: Mentions unrequited Chantho/Professor Yana.
Length: 3:16
Warnings: None.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): Tom Milsom
Why this must be heard:

It's a song about Professor Yana! Musically, this song is a bit different from those I've recommended so far. No guitar. Keyboard and electronic elements instead. It tends to put me in an introspective state of mind. I like the lyrics quite a bit. It's nice to have a song that is focused on 'Utopia', rather than just mentioning it in relation to the events of the following episodes.

A few Ten-era recs for your perusal, which have not much in common besides the Master being hilarious in all of them.

Title: Spiky Time Lord Cocks (Crack Version) (R? I think.)
Pairing: Ten/Simm!Master. With Martha Jones taking notes.
Length: 656
Summary:  Exactly what it says on the tin. Via [livejournal.com profile] sizeofthatthing .
Warnings: Actually, nothing all that disturbing or graphic here, other than a brief glance at the aforementioned equipment.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): Anonymous
Why this must be read: It's almost all dialogue, and the dialogue is great. The Master, as is his wont, spends a good deal of his screen time wisecracking at the Doctor's expense. And despite the utter crackiness of the prompt, this actually comes off as rather plausible and in-character for all three of them. If you only read one Spiky Tiemcock fic -- and really, how many of them does one need? -- this probably ought to be it.

Excerpt: “You said you were curious!”

“Well, yeah, but I wasn’t expecting a technical demonstration in the middle of my living room!”

“Come on, you’re a doctor! You must be used to all sort of gross natural processes.”

“In people! Not—not—”

“If it bothers you that much,” drawled the Master from Martha’s couch, “the Doctor and I would be perfectly happy to go have disgusting slimy alien sex in the TARDIS. Or in the 19th century.”

Title: A Very Civil Partnership (PG)
Pairing: Ten/Simm!Master
Length: 1130
Summary: Ten and the Master get married, shop for evil curtains, fail spectacularly at applying for a mortgage, and devise a brilliant plan for living happily ever after.
Warnings: A brief but potentially traumatizing reference to Margaret Thatcher.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj
Why this must be read: Again with the dialogue. If you are a sucker for Doctor/Master marital bickering (and who isn't?) this one simply must be on your reading list. Very funny, very fast-paced, and with a rather ingenious ending. The unabashed flufftasticness of this fic is more than balanced by its generous helpings of Doctor-cluelessness, campy Master-evil, and general crackitude.
Excerpt: "And you're currently... unemployed as well?"

The Master cut in, annoyed. "Look, can't we just hypnotise him into giving us a mortgage? Darling," he added, remembering that they were pretending to be human.

"What did I say about mind-control?"

"How should I know? I wasn't listening."

Title: Baby You Can Drive My Car (R)
Pairing: Ten/Simm!Yana
Length: 2,300
Summary: "A quick and fluffy fill for the [livejournal.com profile] best_enemies anon meme, someone requested: Yana never discovers his true identity and takes Ten up on his predictable offer to see the stars -- and is mortally wounded and regenerates without recovering his memories. The Doctor works out very quickly who he must be, but doesn't want to tell and lose what they have."
Warnings: AU, obviously.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): [livejournal.com profile] roachpatrol
Why this must be read: This fic is a sweet, funny, achingly lovely little thing that packs a deceptive punch. It's kind of a first-date story, set in a future Miami that's all salt and sun and little paper drink umbrellas. The premise of a regenerated Yana is delicious, and gorgeously realized. It's written entirely from Yana's point of view, and his obvious delight in life and the Doctor and his new body is nothing short of thrilling. But what I most love about this fic is how well it works as a character study of Ten. He's caught in a bind of his own making here: too selfish to tell Yana the truth and risk losing him, but too tortured by his own conscience to enjoy it. It's the sort of thing that could easily devolve into bathos, but in [livejournal.com profile] roachpatrol 's deft hands, it never does.

Excerpt: "He's been a dying old man in a dying old universe for so long and now he's new, reborn, and he wants to romp along every inch of every galaxy the way he is running along this beach. The stars are coming out above him in a glory of light, an obscene wealth of heat and life and richness, and he wants to scream with it. It's too much for any man to hold, this appreciation, this delight, and not go mad. The drums thunder in his ears, dance through his veins, a wild victory dance of primal joy."

I was told by a couple of people to post this here. Only the first minute or so is particularly D/M-ish, so let me know if you'd rather I take it down. :)

Title: Architecture and Mortality
Characters/Pairings: vaguely Nine/Yana, Rose Tyler
Rating: PG
Setting/Spoilers: AU branching off from the end of “Rose”
Summary: The Doctor takes a wrong turn at the destruction of Earth, and ends up travelling all the way to the end of the universe.

Note: So, once upon a time I got it into my head that I was going to write an epic fanfic novella where Yana becomes Nine's companion. My completion of that novella is looking increasingly unlikely, as a different project has taken up most of my fandom time for the past few months, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to post the short, self-contained beginning for Nine's birthday.

Huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] neveralarch and [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne for for their input on this!

It turns out that the end of the universe is absolutely lousy with humans, and that they've all got big, stupid, human ideas about outlasting space-time itself.

Title: Atavism
Author: [livejournal.com profile] snowgrouse
Pairing: Ten/Yana
Rating: NC-17
Length: 170 words
Summary: On Utopia, the Doctor dreams of Yana and the things he could show him.
A/N: Another poetic little Ten/Yana double drabble. May be a bit of a companion piece to Jamais Vu. Although you don't need to have read it to read this.

(He'd show Yana.)

Title: Across the Universe
Pairing: Eight/Jacobi (Johnsmith/Yana)
Rating: R
Word Count: about 5000
Summary: Written for the prompt: Eight/any Master. Both chameleon-arched, both human, neither realises (at least at first) who the other is. In which the Doctor is an oversexed ex-soldier, and the Master is a sweet old professor trying to get the human race to Utopia.

Title: Variations on Forever (11/13)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne
Word Count: This chapter: 12,000
Pairing: This chapter: Ten/Professor Yana, Ten/Simm, non-sexual Master/Lucy, unrequited Jack/Ten
Rating: This chapter: NC-17 for sex, violence and language
Warnings: Violence, including both domestic violence and guns. Very quick and non-explicit mention of non-con (probably not even noticeable, but I'd rather over-warn than under). Technically there's character death, but only the 'don't worry, he bounces right back' kind
Beta thanks: to the marvelous [livejournal.com profile] blackletter
Summary: Wherein Professor Yana is flattered by the attentions of the Last of the Time Lords, Harry Saxon takes a wife, and the Mister Master once again goes hunting in Captain Jack's head.
AN: Written for the Big Bang. Next chapter due Sunday.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne
Word Count: This chapter: 9,500
Pairing: This chapter: Eight/Roberts, Shalka!Doctor/Shalka!Master, Shalka!Doctor/Yana!Master, plus a nibble of implied Ten/Simm and a bit of mild Eight/Jack Harkness
Rating: This chapter: NC-17 for sexytimes, violence and language
Warnings: Mentions of the horrors of war, I suppose
Beta thanks: to the marvelous [livejournal.com profile] blackletter
Summary: Wherein the Master is a snake, the Master is a human, the Master is an android, the Master is a Time Lord, the Master is a human again, and the universe wages Time War in the meanwhile.
AN: Written for the Big Bang. Next chapter due Thursday.

Chapter One lives here, Chapter Two here, Chapter Three here, Chapter Four here, Chapter Five here, Chapter Six here, Chapter Seven here, Chapter Eight here, and Chapter Nine here.

The Rules: Be freely off topic and respond to any you feel like! Or none! Or just write comment crack/porn, since I had a lot of fun reading that last time and maybe you did too?

Think these questions are lame? I'm running out and we never talk about the actual questions anyway. Feel free to offer up some of your own in the comments and I'll edit the posts accordingly.

Once weekly we gather and I say unto you, "Discuss some things!" Whereupon you say "What things?" And I say "The following things! OR OTHERS OF YOUR OWN CHOOSING!!"

* Since we have a Yana/Jacobi!Master challenge this month, what do you think of the differences between Professor Yana and John Smith? I've heard it tossed around on the internetz that Yana is arguably the 'better human.' If so, why?

* Good job thinking on the above! Now stop analyzing and write me comment pr0n about Masters of your choice visiting and fucking around with John Smith. You know you want to!

* Do you think Yana was actually found as a child on the edge of the Silver Devastation, or like John Smith's memories of growing up in Nottingham, was that just an implanted memory? How long had Yana been human/at the end of the universe before the Doctor's arrival? Other than what we see, what's his life there been like/consisted of and how does the whole experience effect him when he resumes being Jacobi!Master/when he regenerates into Simm!Master? What was the Master's plan with Yana (it's hard to believe he intends to die there as a human)?

When will my Mamet Untouchables subject line joke die? Never. Probably about two challenges from now when I stop finding it funny.
