What's that you say? You've always wanted a mashup of "Time Crash" with "The Raven"?

I'm not sure exactly how historical this is, but it had to be done. Also it is surely the fault of [livejournal.com profile] elviaprose, whose Three/Delgado "Highwayman" parody was made of finest win.

Good Day, Ladies, Gentlemen, and those of the 26 genders of Metabelix 9. My name is RF93, and I am to be your latest Reccer.

I would like to speak to you briefly on the subject of Doctor/Master Fanvids.

Now I'm sure many or most of you will have seen the worst this category has to offer, shoddily constructed affairs set to pop or rock songs, looping the same three scenes from 'Last of the Time Lords' a half a dozen times.

While these can be entertaining, I understand that the fine members of B_E are a certain level of connoisseur, and expect nothing but the best for their viewing pleasure.

To that effect, I wish to introduce, or rather remind my readers that while we are fortunate enough to have extraordinary authors and remarkable artists, Doctor/Master fandom is host to several excellent fanvids of both old and new D/M varieties.

As with most fanfiction of this pairing, two basic genres of vid exist. For the purposes of this review, I have chosen one of each category.

The Epic: Space Dementia by nastally
Pairing: All Doctor/Master, emphasis on New Who.
Why It Should Be Watched: The creator describes this as her Magnum Opus, and it truly is. The editing is beautiful, with some of the best timing and cuts I have ever seen, set to slightly haunting music. While not a fast paced video, it does not give the feeling of slowing or growing repetetive throughout its six minute run, the artist using every era and (my favorite gimmick), well incorporated quotes from the show to paint one of the best psychological and historical profiles of this pairing.
Warnings: Leaves that wonderfully slightly sad and disturbed feeling in the pit of your stomach that only the best fics and artwork do.

The Crack: Drop Dead Gorgeous by GeckoGoose
Pairing: All Doctor/Masters up to 'LotTL'
Why It Should Be Watched: In the way that only sometime crack!fic and vids can do, this is a perfect representation of Doctor/Master, (to say nothing of Doctor/Master Fandom) through the years. With every canonized version of both our Best Enemies, quick and playful editing and above all, perhaps the catchiest song with remarkably relevant lyrics since ABBA's Mamma Mia. While highly under appreciated at only 1200 views, this is perhaps one of the best in D/M Crack!vids.
Warnings: No, seriously. This song will stick in your head whether you love it or hate it.

Thank you for your time. Please continue to enjoy your LiveJournal Experience.

Title: First Steps
Pairing: Gen. Snail, Flabbaduckarusa and Tagalong. Or, in adult-speak: the Doctor, Braxiatel, and the Master.
Length: 21,925
Summary: There's being born, and then there's being born into a world with no adults, no clothes, no food and a terrifying alien Thing upstairs. When their Looms birth them straight into the middle of an emergency, can Our Heroes muddle through?
Warnings: Miscarriage/infant death and severe burns and dehydration in Chapter Three.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): charamei on Dreamwidth, Charamei on AO3
Why this must be read:

This is kid!fic of the highest order. I love so many things about this: the Doctor's first words; Braxiatel getting stuck with a ridiculous name; the Doctor's immediate fondness for screwdrivers; the ridiculous picture the adult Time Lords make sunk into the mud; the epilogue! I love the last line so much. So much of this fic makes me grin until my face hurts, but it's not without angst, as well. And adventures!

The story takes bits of Lungbarrow and other canon, and uses them in a creative and interesting way.  Probably my favorite use of Looms in fanfic, ever. In fact, this fic as a whole seems very creative and fresh to me.

The Doctor, Brax, and the Master possess the essential character traits that make them themselves, but they are also very much young children. Charamei achieves just the right balance of these things, so that they are in character, but also believable as just-loomed Time Tots. I really hope you give this story a read!

Title: Gallifreyan History 101
Pairing: Gen? (I'm honestly not sure.)
Length: 4:27
Warnings: Silliness.
Musical Artist and Cosplayers: Chameleon Circuit (link to DFTBA and to Itunes) and TARDISparty

Why this must be seen:

This is so much fun! It's a music video done for another Chameleon Circuit song, this time off their first album. The song itself isn't about the Doctor and the Master; I've included this for the video. The video was made by a couple of cosplayers, playing the Fifth Doctor and Ainley!Master. The song provides the setting (a lecture about Gallifreyan history to an Academy class). The video consists of the Doctor and the Master being the sort of students a professor might have nightmares about. There are jellybabies, paper ball throwing fights, note passing, falling asleep on each other, and hat theft!

Title: Knitting Is Not A Language (Except When It Is)
Pairing: Fifth Doctor, Ainley Master
Length: 1700~ish
Summary: The Doctor receives a very peculiar message.
Warnings: The adorableness that is Five becomes a bit blinding, but you still have to love it.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): [livejournal.com profile] nemaline
Why this must be read:

Cy, being the brilliant person that she is, knitted a Dalek. We were all very anxious to see pictures and when she finally showed us her finished work, and we got a bit side tracked. She mentioned the mental image of Ten knitting, I said he should have one on his TARDIS somewhere and find it randomly, Cy said it had to be left by the person who made the scarf and somewhere along the line this person became the Master. This was along with, naturally, our discussion of knitted Dalek armies taking over the world and stopping DW execs from making terrible mistakes with Tay's ingenious death rays.

As you can see, it was the former that actually made it to fic. She sent it to me the next day and then promptly forgot that she'd done so, conversation that lead to it included. This is actually one of the greatest things about Cy. Seriously, she's got the memory of a goldfish. I can outline the whole master plot of one of my fics while bouncing ideas off her and she'll still be in suspense over it by the time I get around to typing it up. It's brilliant. I'm pretty sure she'll read this and not remember anything about that conversation, despite it being the third time I've reminded her of it. <3 We love her anyway.

Now, I'm not reccing this because Cy is one of my dearest friends (though she is that), nor because the knitted Daleks made me do it (though I'm sure they'd hold me hostage if they could), but because this is probably one of the cutest darned things you can read. Let's face it. The mental image of little Koschei knitting the Scarf and making it so big because he simply was too proud to admit he didn't know how to finish it off is adorable. Fivey attempting to knit a message back in the end only tops off the squees.

It's lovely and well written and has bunches of knitted Who aliens as part of some undoubtedly nefarious, yet cute, plot of the Master's. What is not to love about this? So do yourself a favor and go read it!

Excerpt:

The Doctor had made many unorthodox repairs to his TARDIS over the years, but other than a few bits of string holding things together, he’d never made electrical components out of wool. Frowning, he reached into the drawer and pulled the thing out - assuming it would be a hat or glove that had found its way in there by mistake.

When he saw what it was, he almost dropped it in surprise.

It was, unmistakeably, a Dalek, and probably the least threatening Dalek he’d ever seen; it was about eight inches tall, very squashy, and made of soft grey and black wool. More than simply made of: it had been knitted, and with some considerable skill and attention to detail at that. The panels of the base were clearly in place, each of them with their rows of neat black hemispheres standing out sharply; the details of the upper body, the blinking lights on top, even the weapons and the eyestalk – all were carefully duplicated and represented in the medium of yarn.

Which meant that someone had, painstakingly, sat down and spent hours of their time and effort making a cuddly toy replica of one of the most deadly and vicious beings in the known universe.

That's right, another week of me spamming the com with recs.  BECAUSE I CAN.  Enjoy!

Title:
Worst Bedtime Story Ever.
Pairing: Ainley Master/Fifth Doctor implied, Five Bot
Length: 670~ish
Summary: The Master tucks his pet Doctor replica in with a bedtime story.
Warnings: Utter cuteness and crack
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): [livejournal.com profile] tardiscrash
Why this must be read:

So, this is probably a bit short for one of my normal recs... but it's also adorable and I really couldn't not put it up here.

One of the things I love about tardiscrash's fics is that they are usually happy ones. Yes, I know. There's probably a lot of shock in that, coming from me, but even I like happy sometimes. With the Doctor and Master, it's sometimes so very rare to see them just enjoying each other. No games. No killing. No angst. Just simple pleasure that does something wonderful for the fandom. Especially the Five and Ainley ones, because while Five is just meant to be tortured, it's good to see him happy every so often too.

Also, I think Ainley is a bit of an under-appreciated Master. I haven't heard many people that dislike him, but he just seems like he's forgotten among the other Masters. He doesn't quite have the charm of the Delgado Master, nor the craziness of Simm, or even the outstanding horror of Roberts Master (sorry, Roberts fans, but... *shudders*), but he's melodramatic and over the top and really quite fun in his own way. He gave new life to a character who had spent such a long time out of the series only to come back crispy, not to mention giving us some lovely angst and memorable serials.

tardiscrash does such a lovely job with the Fifth Doctor and Ainley Master's voices too. Seriously, have I mentioned how jealous of that I am? I've never quite managed to find a good pitch for Ainley and my Five... Well, we aren't going into my love-hate relationship with writing Five. Suffice it to say, I am extraordinarily jealous on how effortlessly tardiscrash is able to write these characters and make them sound so perfect.

This story in particular is part of the Five Bot universe, which is, for those of you who don't know about it, utterly adorable. The Master finds himself with a sex bot who is about as innocent as a five year old and looks exactly like the Fifth Doctor and ends up as a legal guardian instead of an owner. Did I mention there was adorable fluff?

This story is one of my particular favorites. The idea of the Master explaining his relationship with the Doctor to a lesser life form as a bed time story not only wonderfully gives us clues to his own feelings, but also is just adorable and fluffy and with crack to spare. Seriously, why isn't this done more in fandom?

Also, I have much adoration for how the Master ends the bedtime story. It amused me greatly. So go forth and immerse yourself in the cuteness, my kittens! You won't regret it.

Excerpt:

“To his dismay he found that the shepherd boy was scared of him and didn’t want anything to do with him. “Go away.” he shouted as he hid behind his garden wall. “Wolves are evil and not to be trusted, I would certainly never want to play with one.” The wolf stayed there all day and night hoping that the shepherd boy would change his mind but he would not. Hearts broken the wolf left, taking out a few sheep for spite as he left the property.”

Extra: And since I went on and on (though thankfully didn't go longer than the story itself again) and that one was short, I'll also give you another fic of tardiscrash's. This time with Awesome Six Voice. Plus, Six and Simm need to happen far more often. It just does. Foresight and Hindsight

The other day I sat down and watched all of the Pepe le Pew cartoons. I came to the conclusion that the Master makes a lot more sense if you think of him as an evil version of our favorite skunk. Behold, the crack-spawn of my brain.

Here's how it goes: I take dialogue from Pepe le Pew cartoons, then add them to appropriate Doctor/Master images. It all adds up to sweet, glorious crack. I pray that the "cut" feature works for this.

Everyone should have a hobby )

I would like to send everyone over to sparklingblue's Deviantart

I'm sure most everyone is aware of Jam Watson of Hark a Vagrant fame. Well, [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne pointed out in a comment at some point that Five-bot was pretty much Jam Doctor. It came up again when she came to visit and as remixing Hark is very much a thing to do, I made this:

Title: Reception of the Daleks
Pairing: Five/Ainley, Many Doctors/Ainley
Length: <1000 for both parts
Summary: The Doctor and the Master get hitched
Warnings: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne
Why this must be read: So many wonderful little fics get lost to the ages because they are lost in comments or simply not cross posted. This is one. I'm biased as it was actually born in comments to something I drew but, It's got loads of Doctors, companions and a sprinkaling of Time Lords at a big silly party, also explostions! It's all I ever wanted from a fic.

Excerpt:

Mrs. Josephine Jones tells everyone who will listen, with happy tears in her eyes, that the Doctor’s old adversary has been healed by the power of love and given up his wicked ways for good. But the rest of them simply assume that the Doctor knows what he is doing, more or less, and that nothing really bad can happen to them with so many Doctors in the same place and time.

The Daleks would do well to remember the same.
