Rec? Rec here.

n.b. usually this is just a nebulous request, but we've only got one more reccer lined up after [livejournal.com profile] the_curlyone. so Imma gonna need people from the 29th May onwards if this thing is going to continue. Any takers? Remember - anyone can rec! It's a nice way of directing people to your favourite things, to participate in fandom, and to reward those artists whose work you enjoy. Plus, it gives me something to read and keeps the com moving, which is why I encourage it so strongly every week. Please do sign up to rec.

As usual there are also more promotional announcements:

Remix Redux 09 is live! In case you don't know, Remix Redux is a pan-fandom challenge, in which authors take someone else's story and rewrite it the way they would have written it, often from another character's perspective, but also in a variety of other unique and interesting ways to create original stories that also compliment the fic they're based on. It's one of my favourite fandom things, and so... I encourage it strongly. This year a really high number of Doctor/Master people participated (n.b. me included, let's not beat about the bush here). The fic produced will probably be reposted on LJ and Teaspoon eventually, but you can get it now by clicking on the link above, going to the 'fandom' area of the sidebar, and clicking on the three variations of Doctor Who (annoying, but there you go) to make sure you haven't missed anything. I count about 5 and a half Doctor/Master fics, and lots of other good ones besides. The Martha/Zoe is a particular favourite.

Regular programming: Get your drabble/sketch prompts here!

From this week on, we'll be using a selection of prompts suggested by [livejournal.com profile] insanitysorigin (thanks). Starting with colours and/or weather.

This week's prompts are:

Red

and/or

Sunshine

Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: Doctor Who and all related trademarks are the property of their respective owners, mostly the BBC.
Summary: Taking the Master on a tourist trip to a planet called Midnight turns out not to have been one of the Doctor's better ideas.
Author's Notes: So, anyone remember that remix challenge that happened ages and ages ago? Yes, I’m setting a new standard for lateness (though at least I’m not as bad as Eleven?) Long explanation short: computer troubles. Including explosions.

This is a remix of Sportsmanship by [livejournal.com profile] rhaella , though technically it’s more of a sequel (and also a remix of Midnight) and was wonderfully betaed by [livejournal.com profile] blackletter .

did somebody say really, really late pinch-hit? for [livejournal.com profile] time_testudinem. at last.

Title: Montague (The ‘Acting Kinda Shady’ Remix)
Pairing: Doctor/Master - mainly Eleven/the War Chief (two characters i am not all that familiar with. for obvious reasons)
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 800
Original story: Everything Is In A Name by [livejournal.com profile] time_testudinem
Summary: The War Chief is looking for a new identity; the Doctor is looking for an old friend.

Title: No Longer Hearing DINOSAURS!! (A Lot of (Pre)History Remix)
Original: No Longer Hearing Voices by the incomparable, above-rubies [personal profile] aralias
Rating: PG-13 (Oh, no one even takes a coat off, it's sad, really.)
Author:[personal profile] x_los
Pairing/Characters: Five/Simm!Master
Summary: Action figure porn so deadly serious that, upon meeting it in an alley, a group of academics headed for an conference on the legacy of Max Weber paled, surrendered the field, turned around, walked home, resigned from their professorial positions and, the next day, while watching the Hills, applied for internships with Gawker. Action figure porn so unbelievably filthy that the compiler has received a salacious proposition/invitation to a quilting bee from zombie!Vladimir Nabokov, who happened to catch a glimpse of a photographic negative or three. Action figure porn that answers the irritating 'caw-kaw, caw-kaw!' noise that is the ceaseless cry of our generation for pure milk from the masectomied teat of Mother Nature--action figure porn WITH DINOSAURS!! * I said I'd do it. Where's your god now?

Late Comers: While the deadline had passed, a late submission is ever so much better than none at all! Take the time you need to finish your story properly, but bear in mind that your person is probably waiting anxiously for your fic. They might appreciate being dropped a short line, to say 'my bad' and keep them in the loop? If you haven't told me you'll be a touch overdue, I'd like to hear from you, so I know you're still playing. We'll arrange something else for people who've remixed and whose remixers have wandered off, perhaps pinch-hitters can fill in. Everyone /will/ get their remix if I have to write it myself. :p On that not, I, sadly, have been distracted by RL and am/will be late, so I know your chagrin, etc. But we'd still love to see these fics, so post them proudly!

Here are the remixes submitted thus far:

One Last Time (the Seven Hundred Years After remix)
Three True Things (The 'I'm Not Paralysed' Remix)
Twists and Bends
Imaginary Worlds (the Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect Remix) *
Reach Out and Touch Someone (A drabble Remixed)
500 Bottles of Beer (The 'Really Growing On Me' Remix)

I've been lazy of late and still owe some of these comments, but I'm very impressed by the general standard of quality.

* Okay I just want to point out that it's weird that someone remixed me and, without knowing my (second) favorite band, drew their remix title from a Decemberists song lyric. REMIXING IS EERIE AND AWESOME, GUYS.

Title: One Last Time (the Seven Hundred Years After remix)
Rating: Young adult?
Summary: The Doctor goes back in time to say goodbye to Koschei. Original story by Unfeathered ( http://unfeathered.livejournal.com/105285.html#cutid1 )

I'm not really satisfied with this version, but I'm already a day late and, after starting and restarted the remix at least five times since I decided on remixing One Last Time, I think if I don't decide this is the finished product I'm not going to have a finished product, ever.

And now, after that terribly encouraging note, I hope you like this, Unfeathered!

Title: Three True Things (The 'I'm Not Paralysed' Remix)
Author: Culumacilinte
Rating: PG
Word Count: 2032
Pairing: Hints of Theta/Koschei, Three/Delgado, and Five/Ainley
Original Story: Shunyata, by [livejournal.com profile] skipthedemon
Summary: So he tells her the story of the day he was initiated into the Academy- the hermit on a hill behind his house, and the daisiest daisy he'd ever seen, and as he'd hoped, she's comforted by it.

A/N: Much thanks to the lovely [livejournal.com profile] faience for the beta-job, and thanks, of course, to [livejournal.com profile] skipthedemon , for writing such a wonderful fic for me to have the pleasure of remixing.

Title: Twists and Bends
Original story: No Exit (Everybody Lives) by [livejournal.com profile] bagheera_san
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: Tenth Doctor/Simm!Master
Rating: R
Word Count: 1146
Spoilers: End of Season 3 (NB the original story has slight spoilers for the end of Season 4)
Disclaimer: Not mine
Summary: With the Doctor apparently coming round to his way of thinking, the Master reflects, and celebrates.
Beta: The everlastingly wonderful [livejournal.com profile] mad_jaks
Author's Note: Written for the fic remix at [livejournal.com profile] best_enemies. This is the twist I kind of expected when I first read [livejournal.com profile] bagheera_san's story. (Not that her story needs it; it's excellent as it is. It's just that this is where my mind went as I read it.) It's not so much a remix as a tag to the original story and follows on immediately from where the original left off.

Title: 500 Bottles of Beer (The 'Really Growing On Me' Remix)
Pairing: Doctor/Master - mainly Eight/Delgado
Rating: R
Word Count: 12,500 - it got away from me
Original story: Concerning Bondage, by [livejournal.com profile] hobbit_feets
Summary: “Never,” the Doctor said firmly. “Never, ever, ever, ever, ever. Ever,” he added. “I never say yes and I never will say yes. Trust me, I was there."
A wacky plot point pulls the Eighth Doctor back in time to discuss Shakespeare, clothing, and the improbability of a shared happily ever after, with Delgado!Master.

Title: Reach Out and Touch Someone (The 1-900-TIMESEX Remix)
Author: Turtle
Rating: R, maybe?, nothing actually explicit
Word Count: 1900 words
Pairing: Delgado!Master/The Valeyard
Summary: Two Time Lords and a long distance call. I like to think this may have been the back-story behind some of the Master’s more over-the-top and wacky plans.
Disclaimer: Nothing in Doctor Who belongs to me, and even the idea for this fic first belonged to[info]hexiva

This fic is a remix of a drabble by Hexiva. The original post can be found here. but because there are several drabbles on that page I have copied the one I used below for easier reading. (Hexiva, please let me know if you would like it removed)

One of the intrepid Remixers brought up a good question (and I'd been thinking of this today as well): can you switch the versions of the Doctor and the Master that crop up in the story? I think that's totally within the spirit of the remix. I had two tons of fun writing 'Valiant-fic w/ Delgado,' I think it's the sort of reexamination, reinvention and creation of personal ownership of the story that we're aiming for. So if that calls to you, go forth and write that Ten/Simm fic as Valeyard/Crispy. That cannot help but end well, I am sure.

If you've got ANY general questions about the workings of the remix, please post them here so that I can help or we can all talk them out. This way your fellows will share in the enlightenment, and another person's 'can I do an all human!au/genderbend/cossover' may provide you with inspiration.

If you'd just like to discuss the remix in general (without giving away your subject's identity, please), this is the post for just that.

And for the lulz, try and keep who's writing what under wraps? Don't know if I mentioned that, but it's Remix Tradition.

Good luck all!
[identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
Remixers, check your lj messages, because I wrote you each a note revealing your remixee. These notes are decreasingly coherent, sorry (too tired for srs fandom business), but hopefully they all manage to convey who has to do what, and if they don't you can pm me back and deliver stern denunciations of my manner of address. And stuff. Good luck!
[identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
This is your last day to sign up for the Remix, and I'd like to encourage you to do so, because

1) you've two whooooole months in which to write the thing,
2) it need only be a thousand words or longer, and
3) you could do the steampunk au of someone's fic or something, omg, how fun would that be?
4) It would be lots. Of fun, I mean.
5) All you have to do now  is fill out this quick questionnaire right here.
6) Why are there two 'n's in 'questionnaire,' does that even make sense to anyone not me?
7) Yes, I'll go now.
8) ...but remember, I'm totes not kidding about adding those dinos. <3
[identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
What's a Remix generally?

Often while reading fic you think 'this is entirely compelling and masterfully written by the very fountain pen of the gods, but I would have added dinosaurs. Lots of dinosaurs.' In a remix, you take a consenting participants' list of fic, choose one, and, in a given span of time, rewrite in a thousand words or more. While you CAN'T change the pairing or the basic plot line, the challenge is to substantially rewrite the fic in question. If you really make it your own while preserving the basic structure, by Jove's exquisite fountain pen, you've done it!

You could shift POV, tenses, change the genre (drama to comedy, for example), write it from a different point in time, expand the beginning or the end, take a central /idea/ of the story and delve into it in a way the original author did not, write a drabble as a full fic, or almost anything else: the idea is to write it from /your/ vantage point, not recapitulate  their work. For more info, see this , this or this. Please avoid WIPs.

Can I get in on this sweet remixing action?

A participant should have three or more stories for their remixer to choose from. The sign-up period will be one week (ending July 24th), and the writing period two months (ending September 24th). You've a good, long window of time to get this done, but contact me if you feel that due to IRL drama (such as a dinosaur attack) you cannot complete your remix, I will summon a Pinch Hitter to see if he or she can step in to remix your person in your stead.

A Doctor/Master Remix:

The Doctor/Master Remix will stick to stories that include that pairing, but won't exclude people who aren't intimately familiar with everything canon's ever done. If you only know New Who, you can still play. We'll match you up with an author you can work with. Given that it's a pairing specific remix, please don't decide that your story would be ever so much more awesome if you replaced Ainley!Master with the 4-5-6. Even if it would be funny. And terrible.

Further Information:

If for whatever reason you don't want a specific story remixed, you are allowed one Safe Story, and your remixer must respect that and keep his or her hands off.

Are you of Herculean writing powers? Do you possess an especially generous soul? You could volunteer to be such an Pinch Hitter (as seen in paragraph 2!). This means someone has gone AWOL and we need you to remix something their person's written in whatever time period's left, provided I think that can be reasonably accomplished. We would drape you in laurels, crown you in glory, and generally think you're pretty neato.

Please comment with the information below If you'd like to participate in the Doctor/Master fic remix:

Name:
Email:
Live journal, website, or other fic index:*
Safe Story:
Stories that have been remixed:
What are eras are you comfortable writing? (NewWho, Classic, BFA audio, comics, books, etc.)
Are there any eras you're not comfortable writing? (See above)
Are you willing to pinch-hit if needed?
Comfortable writing NC-17 content?

*Your remixer will find it convenient if you've got your eligible fic indexed via a post, tags, or anything of that nature. Some people like to leave their remixer a helpful post directing them towards the fic.

[identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
When the proper [livejournal.com profile] remixredux  has rattled to its conclusion (or indeed, some little time later, to give those who participated a breather), would we as a com have any interest in a pairing specific remix fest? If you're wondering what in blazes I'm on about now, the com above explains its process better than I could.

Comment and tell me yes, yes, you're in like flint or no, it's a foul idea you want none of, and you've brought good reasons why.

It could be a good fic challenge, and we've not run one in a while.
