Title: The Gallifreyan Patient
Pairing: Ten/(Simm) Master, Ten/author created Master
Length: Chapters: 16, Words: 27,363
Summary: AU after "Last of the Time Lords." The Doctor took the Master on board the TARDIS after the Year That Never Was hoping to help him, but they couldn't have anticipated old feelings getting in the way.
Rating/Warnings: R, depression, self-harm, suicide (not Doctor or Master), swearing
Author: Rebekah Reynolds (fanfiction.net)
Why this must be read: I love how the Master is the star of this story. Although the story is about the Doctor and Master's growing romantic relationship, it is just as focused on the Master's personal story: his depression, internal struggles, and journey towards self-understanding, forgiveness, and not being evil anymore. The story really gets inside the Master's head, treating the drums as a mental illness and showing the different ways that he attempts to deal with them.I love the idea of the Master using art therapy! One of the most touching and realistic "Master turns good" fics that I've ever read.
Excerpt: "Picking up a brush he painted out his frustration and hurt until he was too tired to carry on then stood back to admire his work: if he had to assign his art a style it would certainly be impressionist, but much more like Picasso than Van Gogh, the subject of his painting was recognisably the doctor but his features were a jumbled mess of all the faces and bodies the master had known him as. The hair and clothes were the same as they were now but the eyes of the man in his painting were the eyes the master had known when they were young, they were eyes which would never dismiss him like the doctor had done earlier, that doctor had not been betrayed by his best friend yet and had not grown to hate him."

Okay, you guys. I know with nine hundred percent certainty that this idea has been done before and is probably lame. But gosh darn it, for some reason I can't actually find it and I wanted to give it a go myself. Remember to HEED THE WARNINGS.

Also, I'm not exactly sure how kosher crossover fics on this comm are?  I promise this one is basically purely Doctor/Master, the focus is Doctor/Master, and the result is Doctor/Master, but if for whatever reason this is somehow Not Kosher to Comm, let me know, and I will make it vanish forever.

Title: One of Mine

Go, evil Doctor!  Go!

Title:
The Steps
Pairing: Tenth Doctor/Various Masters
Length: 1,700~ish
Summary: He knows the steps he has to follow.
Warnings: Angst, but the good kind. Spoilers for LotTL.
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian): [livejournal.com profile] evilawyer
Why this must be read:

There are three main reasons why I love this fic. First is the angst. Ten does angst remarkably well, doesn't he? He's second only to Five on my 'Doctors I Need to Torture' list. Through, granted, I usually end up torturing the Master, I still do can't say no to a good bit of Doctor tormenting. Which is what this is, Ten having a good angst over the Master's body. It's particularly love, if just because while the Doctor is trying his best to ignore the angst, his memory comes up and tortures him regardless. Mental torment is truly delectable.

The second reason is the repetition. Really, I'm a sucker for some well used repetition, and this fic definitely falls under that. The Doctor's need to follow the steps and his faltering, constant insistence to keep going. It's just a bit pathetic and every bit wonderful as the Doctor tries to put the body of someone he cares about to rest, falling back on the steps because it's the only thing left of the Master that he can cling to.

Which brings my to my third and final point, the reason the Doctor is having so much trouble with getting it done. The Master in his memory has come up to haunt him and let's face it, when has the Doctor ever let things just be easy? The wonderful thing about this fic though, is that the Master switches regenerations throughout the conversation. Simm Master, Jacobi Master, Roberts Master, Ainley Master, Crispy Master, (my personal favorite) Delgado Master, and even a bit of Koschei, they all make a brief appearance as the Doctor prepares his body and with perfect voices for each one. They're all their own, separate characters while being singular, and you can feel it when each of them speaks. It's really what brings this fic together and makes it so very brilliant.

In short... stop reading me babble and start reading the good stuff!

Excerpt:

Place the cloth into the spiced water. Wring it out. Stroke it over the left shoulder, down the upper left arm and over the forearm.

“Tell me, Doctor, is this what you imagined you'd be doing right now? All year, when you were plotting my downfall, was this what you were thinking of?”

Follow the steps. Place the cloth into the spiced water. Wring it out. Lift the left hand, wipe the back of it, then the palm, then the fingers.

“When you were sitting there as silent and as entertaining as a clump of your precious earth, did you see yourself washing my body? Touching me?” The Master moves to the head of the bier and rests his hands on either side of his own head. He leans forward conspiratorially and drops his voice to lewd level. “Is it as good as you thought it would be?”

Follow the steps. The steps don't include listening.

Tis the season to crossover (Fa la la la la~) No, really, the King's Speech, Hereafter, and Lear? The universe wants you to put more Jacobi in your fics! Alright, so there's no Jacobi in today's fic. It's still lovely. and I still need Eight barging in on the Master's passionate performance. Here's to crossovers!

Title: Those Aren't Mine
Pairing: Five/Ainley!Master
Length: 671
Summary: While sorting through the Doctor's things, the Master comes across some very interesting letters.
Warnings: None
Author on LJ (or Teaspoon, or Prydonian):[livejournal.com profile] sm47
Why this must be read: Even if you don't pick up on the punchline, the framing descriptions are worth it. The Master tidies up after the untidy, yet chaotically organized, Doctor. This is just canon. He's also just a touch possessive. I think what stuck with me about this fic was its length. Many crossover stories strive for so much more, with a great deal less heart. Implied, danced around, good natured crossover at its best.
Excerpt:Currently the Master was sorting through a large, musty trunk, which served as a part of his rival’s abysmal cataloguing system. )

Title: Unknown.
Pairing: Ten/Goosnake!Master
Length: about 500
Warnings: Goosnake
Author on LJ: Unknown!
Summary: When Simm!Master refuses to regenerate in Last of the Time Lords, he turns back into a goosnake. Ten/Goosnake.
Why this must be read: Another crack prompt that becomes genius by virtue of taking itself seriously. Very interesting and appropriate POV and in a very short space of time it points out some contradictory parts of the Doctor's nature. Very sad, but not without hope. Altogether a very interesting thing, and very short so there's really no reason you shouldn't read it.

Extract: His enemies say the Doctor is most cruel when he gives you what you want./ But this is as nothing to what he did to the man who refused to live.

I've been lurking this community for a while, and I'm finally gonna delurk with fic. I really shouldn't be as nervous about posting on here as I am, huuurgh. Also, wasn't quite sure whether to tag this as Ten/Yana or not, since it's Jacobi!Master.

I know it's a bit late, but here are some thoughts and two fanfictions inspired by last weeks Battle Royal: 'Mark of the Rani' vs. 'Utopia'.

Since the Doctor compared the Master to a laburnum tree in 'Mark of the Rani', I did a little research on the symbolic meaning of said tree (because as another fandom taught me, every plant has at least one). You can find the little bit I found and some other thoughts here.

And here is a little double drabble inspired by the same serial.

Because I voted for 'Utopia', I thought I should write a short fanfiction for it, too. My plotbunnies agreed and although I am not entirely happy with it, you can read it here. It is an AU-ending for 'Utopia' and called 'Unexpected'.
