Why this must be read: I don't think anything captures the ambiguities of men who would make or live as the sort of android Shalka!Master is, in the sort of position he's in, quite so compassionately, brutally, and well as this fic. It's such a good character piece, for everyone involved. SUCH good voices.
And it's not just well-written, thematically toothsome and richly cast--it's got enviable narrative cojones. Stuff happens, and characters and relationships change, and it's heady and great. And talk about accomplishing a LOT in a short length!
This also deals with the gritty, annoying 'third of the universe' bit, giving it due consequences and something like psychological realism (which is more than canon bothered to do, and part of why, I think, fic often skirts the whole issue--not only is it too HUGE to deal with, it's also under-written, insufficiently determined in the source material). This fic is tragically unfinished. I'm really drawn to it, and hope it may someday continue. From what's on the page at present you can feel its velocity, its capacity to really go somewhere. But even if this is all there ever is, this is a full and sufficient read--don't avoid it because WIPs make you wibble--this *stands* as it is.
Excerpt:
"“You died. And I... well, I suppose I brought you back to life.”
“It's happened, hasn't it? You've finally snapped. I could have sworn I didn't shoot you in the head, you know.”
“Could you at least try to take my word for it?”
The Master considers him. “I would appear to have no choice. Am I to assume that my lack of mobility is an intentional feature of my miraculous resurrection?”
“No,” says the Doctor. “I just haven't finished the legs.”
The Master looks down, and what the Doctor can see of his face spasms wide.
“What is this?” he snarls, and the words embed themselves in the Doctor's soul with an almost physical force. (It's him like he was.) “What have you done?”"
